ADVANCED SWING METRICS BY SWINGTRACKER

Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OFPosition Projection

07/10/2011 - Select Training at the All-Star Game Kern improved foot speed at the event as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.56 runner as he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls as he takes good first steps. Defensive grades have improved to solid average. Arm strength has improved through a loose, accurate arm action but needs to stay on a long toss program to aid in building more arm strength with carry. Offensively, left handed hitting grades have really improved now showing solid average from both sides. He shows loose hands with life in his swing. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields as he lets the ball travel. He shows good balanced and feel for the barrel with power numbers improving as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing.

10/17/2010 - National Tryout - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Sam showed some improvements in his game during his most recent workout in Seattle, WA. He increased his radar velocity from 68 to 80 MPH. Defensively, Sam makes plays on balls hit his way and he tracks it well. He moves well laterally, has playable feet, and he moves through the ball well. Sam squares his body well to his target, and throws with a short, loose arm action to his target. Improved angles and looser body actions will help defensive grades further improve. At the plate, Sam has an open stance, short stride, and good balance. He has a quick bat, he makes hard contact, and he stays inside the ball. Sam has a level swing path and he can spray the ball to all fields. Hitting grades can improve by tracking the ball better and tapping into more lower 1/2.

08/11/2010 - Pirate City World Series 2010 - Session 2 Kern showed similar abilities that we had previously seen in Bellevue, WA. He moves well laterally as he tracks ball down well in the OF where he projects best. Routes / angles are solid but needs to work on reading balls better off the bat. Throws show accuracy as he will benefit by staying a long toss program. Offensively, Sam works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will increase as he adds more overall body strength. He is a team player with a tremendous attitude.

06/06/2010 - College PREP - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Sam is a young OF with an average frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls in the OF but needs to work on getting behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. He shows a low approach on ground balls. Arm slot is low but work on line with throws as will benefit in improving footwork to throw in getting rid of the baseball quickly. Offensively, Kern shows as a switch hitter but only projects from the right side for the next level. He attacks the baseball with his hands showing an aggressive approach from the right side. He loads well, working to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. From the left side, he is only a contact hitter. With 2 years to further develop, Sam has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
