06/03/2015 - Under Armour Southeast Championships, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Sam is a true gamer who makes things happen. Defensively, this athlete has the ability to play all over in the INF. He tracks the GB into his mitt, working from the ground-up while playing right to left through the ball. Transfer/exchange is quick/clean with accurate throws into 1B's chest. He has the ability to throw from multiple arm slots, making the tough plays on the run. O'Brien proved to be a tough out at the plate. Going and impressive 7 for 11 - he has a knack for barreling the ball up. He understands what kind of hitter he is, as he squares the ball up and always seems to get on base. He is an aggressive baserunner reading balls in the dirt well (2 stolen bases at the event). He is a very coachable player who is a quick learner. With a little added strength to add to his already solid skill-set - Sam will compete at a high level.

05/17/2015 - College PREP - New Orleans, LA Sam showed strong ability and measurables in his most recent Factory outing. Defensively in the OF, he worked behind the ball, took good angles, and was sure with the glove. He had a clean arm stroke and used his lower half to throw with carry. At 2B, he was soft/sure with the glove and showed range to both sides. He worked his head behind the baseball on backhands and with a more aggressive approach will begin getting better hops. Offensively, he had good rhythm and activated hands. He was direct with his path to contact, accurate with the barrel, and fluid throughout the swing. More lower half drive can be achieved through bending more at the knees, allowing for greater bat whip and pop. In all - Sam showed a raw velocity of 84, ran a 7.06 sixty, and made consistent plays.

12/20/2014 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 Sam is a strong athletic player who can play multiple positions on the field. In the infield Sam has fluid actions with soft hands and multiple arm slots. He works around the baseball well, fields out front with a clean exchange. As he plays middle infield more he will get more confidence with his double plays and footwork around bag. At the plate Sam is a very aggressive hitter, but also shows a good idea of the zone. He consistently puts the barrel on the ball and is a great contact hitter. As his rhythm and timing improve his power will get better. Sam has great baseball instincts. He consistently gets great jumps and reads and runs the bases well.

06/17/2014 - USA Baseball 17U Championships Sam is a lean, athletic 2B/SS that will graduate in 2016. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 7.06 60 time. Defensive grade are well above average as he displays smooth, clean actions. He utilizes his quick feet well in his lateral movement as he displays range in the MIF and shows an outstanding backhand. Hands are soft / clean and sure as he presents well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on slow roller plays. Defensive grades will continue to improve as he attacks balls more and plays through with his body. Throws are accurate with carry but needs to work on getting rid of the baseball quicker. At the plate, he shows a squared / balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields through a solid line drive approach. He battles at the plate, displaying good barrel accuracy, allowing the baseball to jump off the bat when centered. He has a plus short game as he is an excellent bunter and will lay it down for a hit. Once on base, he is a smart, aggressive base runner that will take the extra base. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a great kid, is very coachable, and made some great adjustments at the event. With 2 years to further develop, Sam has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
