07/24/2015 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Sam is a hard worker who showed well during his time at Pirate City. At SS, he has quick footwork and hustles to the GB. He has athletic actions, funnels smoothly and has a clean exchange to throw. Working lower (from the ground-up) will help to improve his skills at SS. With the bat, Sam shows a balanced approach with a solid base. He swings on a level path and drives the ball on a line. Relaxing/loosening his grip will allow for more bat whip / bat speed which will result in increased pop off of the barrel. On the mound, Sam works to a tall balance point and has smooth separation. He works quickly and drives off of the rubber. FB now tops out at 72 mph while curveball has 11/5 shape with good depth. He hides the ball well which keeps hitters off balance. Finishing with more extension on his follow through will help to improve effectiveness on all pitches. A 2019 grad - Sam still has a lot of time to develop and grow in the game.

12/27/2014 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 2 Sam continues to show as a SS/RHP and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At SS, defensive grade have improved as he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he squares balls up, displaying clean hands as he makes the routine plays. He shows off his athletic abilities on his as he attacks balls while playing through well. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he continues to increase foot quickness and presents hands more out front. Throws display accurate as he gets rid of the baseball quickly but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate he shows an athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path through an aggressive approach. He works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to get stride foot down sooner. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more efficiently. At the event, he was 3 for 9. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 63-64 mph. Breaking ball displaying 11/5 shape late sharp bite. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all pitches, pounding the zone. Stock on mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and develops another off speed pitch. Mental makeup is a plus as he plays with a lot of energy and is very coachable, working hard to be the best player he can be with a promising future on the diamond.

11/13/2014 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Sam showed as an SS/RHP, currently projecting well at both positions for the next level. He has improved all his baseball tools since the last time we saw him and has the makings of a special type player at the next level. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate is where he has improved the most through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and makes consistent hard contact, showing a feel for the barrel. Lower half works well through the swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he gets stride foot down sooner to work on time. At SS, he displays smooth / athletic actions. He maintains body control with hands / feet working well together through the fielding process. Hands are soft / clean with defensive grade continuing to improve as he plays through balls more while presenting hands more out front. Throws are accurate with carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. On the mound, he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 66mph. Fastball showed a range of 63-66 mph. Control is a plus as he attacks hitters and throws strikes to both sides of the plate. Stock on mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and develops off speed pitches. Mental makeup is a plus as he plays with a lot of energy, is very coachable, working hard to be the best player he can be, and displays outstanding instincts in the game.

08/02/2014 - Interactive Video Program - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Sam is a young 2-way player as a RHP/SS. On the mound, he has a 3-pitch mix coming from a high 3/4 arm slot. FB shows run as he fills up the zone and throws strikes. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape with sharp break. He arm works free and easy as he pounds the zone. At SS, Sam works into a square/low fielding position. He has a quick exchange to throw and gets the ball to 1B accurately. With the bat, this RHH shows patience as he lets the ball travel. He connects and pulls the ball with pop. Overall abilities will improve with work on the following.

1. Arm action
2. Stride/direction
Defense
1. Glove presentation
2. Play through ball
Offense

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
