12/20/2014 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 Sammy continues to work hard on his game. With the glove, he hustles and is aggressive to get around GB's hit to his right and left. He fields the ball cleanly and woks in-line toward his target. Offensively, this righty stands in well with a aggressive approach, looking to swing it. He hits the ball where it's pitched and drives it to all parts of the field. Engaging and utilizing his lower 1/2 more will result in increased power. Sammy is a coachable player who wants to learn and improve his skills.

09/28/2014 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA Sammy showed similar abilities on the fields as he did in previous workouts. Defensively, Sammy makes plays, he keeps the ball in front of his body, and he works the double play well. He has an accurate arm with good direction to his target. INF skills will get better by softening up his glove and playing more through the baseball. Offensively, Sammy sits in the box well, he has strength in his swing, and his bat speed is quick. Better timing, a shorter stroke, and more extension through the ball can help hitting get better.

12/20/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City Sammy proved to be a coachable player who has a willingness to improve. As a hitter, this righty but the barrel on the ball consistently. He delivers the barrel on a level path and maintains good balance throughout his swing. In the middle infield, Sammy shows good prep and works into a square fielding position. He made a few nice plays and shows good range to his glove-side. A speed/agility program will aid in improving Sammy's defensive game. Sherrard is a few adjustments away from unlocking his potential on the diamond.

12/07/2013 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Commuter) (Ages 14-18) Sammy continues to improve his swing, and also continues to work hard and show dedication to the process. His swing is very quiet and balanced, which is allowing him to show more power as a hitter. The next step for Sammy is to work on his rhythm during the swing, he tends to get very stiff and robotic during the load and the swing. This at times takes away from his timing, barrel accuracy, and power.

10/27/2013 - College PREP - Rochester, NY Sammy is a hard worker. Offensively he remains balanced throughout his swing and consistently puts the ball in play. He gets good extension through the ball and contact and drives it on a line. Defensively in the middle infield, he moves well laterally and makes the backhand play smoothly. He has a good exchange and can turn the DP. Sherrard will get to where he wants to be with his willingness to learn and his determination to get better.

09/14/2013 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Commuter) (Ages 14-18) Sammy continues to improve as a hitter. He has done a very good job of developing connection between the lower and upper body, allowing his swing to have more power than a year ago. Sammy continues to show the ability to make good contact and hit the baseball to all fields, but he tends to hold back on his swing. At times it seems that he is worried about swinging and missing, he needs to learn to understand it's okay to swing and miss once and a while. Sammy has a strong body type that could develop a lot of power with the lower half, he needs to learn to let it go at times and swing hard. One thing we would like to see Sammy work on is his rhythm and tempo in the swing, he is very still in his stance which causes him to be very robotic during the swing. He needs to develop some kind of pre-swing movements which will allow his swing to have better rhythm and tempo.

01/18/2013 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Sammy showed similar offensive and defensive abilities during his time in Pirate City. At the plate, Sammy has an athletic set-up, a proper load, and good balance. He is a patient hitter with a level swing path and good plate discipline. In the INF, Sammy has good pre-pitch actions, he charges the ball, and he makes routine plays. He has simple actions and has accuracy to his target.

11/10/2012 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Commuter) (Ages 14-18) Sammy displays a very simple swing with a square athletic stance, with a good load and a short simple stride. Sammy tends to let his hands get in front of his lower half which allows him to be a good contact hitter, but takes away from his power at times. If he focuses on keeping his hands back, and letting his lower half and upper half work together, he will be able to use the hands the way he does now but will have more power to go with it. Even though Sammy does use his hands to early he shows great ability to use them well, with good contact to all fields. Sammy shows the ability to be a good hitter, just needs to allow his body to work together.

07/07/2012 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Sammy continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate, power numbers have improved as he uses his lower half well through the swing and shows a feel for the barrel. He shows an athletic setup and makes consistent contact with hitting grades improving as he learns to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Mental makeup is a plus as he is attentive, coachable, and works hard to be the best player he can be.

04/01/2012 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA Sammy is a young 2B that will graduate in 2015. Feet are active and display clean hands as he makes plays. He needs to attack balls more, play through while presenting hands out front and increase foot speed to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Sherrard shows a balanced approach and makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball and let ball travel to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. With 3 years to further develop, Sammy has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
