08/30/2020 - All-In Membership - Bradenton (Tampa Bay), FL Samuel is a solid (6'0"/190) R/R 2-way player who continues to progress since we last saw him in July. Behind the dish, he sits in well with athletic actions and flexion. He tracks pitches into a soft mitt, framing well. He is quick laterally and centers pitches in the dirt off of his chest, keeping it in front. Throws to 2B are on the bag - pop times now at 1.97. At 3B, he has active prep and moves lightly on the balls of his feet. He has athletic actions & rhythm, funneling smoothly to a clean transfer. He has good lateral range and can make the tough plays to his BH and GS. Offensively, this RHH displays an open stance with centered balance. He fires the barrel with quick hands, connects and hits hard line-drives consistently - exit velocity now at 84 mph. Phillips has the skill-set that will play at a very high level.

07/08/2020 - All-In Membership - Bradenton (Tampa Bay), FL Samuel is a very talented 2-way prospect (C/3B) who has a solid/strong frame. Behind the dish, he sits in well with quiet/athletic actions and good sway, tracking pitches into a soft mitt. Lateral actions are quick as he centers up pitches in the dirt off of his chest. Throws to 2B are accurate coming from a quick transfer/exchange - pop times of 2.07. At 3B, he maintains active prep footwork and moves right to left through the GB. Hands are presented out in front as he funnels to a clean transfer to throw with zip/accuracy to 1B. As a hitter, this strong righty displays an open stance with centered balance. He tracks pitches into the zone and off of his barrel. Hands are quick as he engages his lower 1/2 well to create pop off of the bat (exit velocity = 81 mph). This 2021 grad has a ton of upside with the tools that will translate well into the next level of play.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
