Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/OFPosition Projection

06/22/2012 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Samuel worked out both on the mound and in the OF during his time in Omaha, and he showed us some improvements since his first workout with us earlier this year. On the hill, Samuel is aggressive in the zone, he repeats his delivery, and he works in good rhythm / tempo. He has good direction toward home, good body control, and he pitches to contact. He is a tough competitor and has a good pitcher's make up as he is under control in all situations. Mound effectiveness can improve with a looser arm action, softer front leg, and improved off speed pitches. In the OF, Samuel has a decent first step, some lateral movements, and he catches the ball at its highest point. He makes plays and has accuracy to his target. More crow hop and arm strength will help OF abilities improve. At the plate, Samuel has a nice finish to his swing and is an aggressive hitter with loose hands and good barrel accuracy. Letting the ball travel in the strike zone and using more of his lower 1/2 can help spike offensive numbers. He is a young and driven player who has the chance to be very good as he develops.

04/29/2012 - College PREP - Ashburn (DC), VA Samuel is a tall, lanky LHP with a projectable frame that is well suited for the mound. Delivery is sound / repeatable as he works in line through a solid balance point. Arm action is long but wraps behind his head as he needs to work more out in front of his body and improve lead arm action. Arm slot is low 3/4 with fastball showing a range of 74-75 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays sweeping action with early, gradual across break. He needs to work on staying on top of the pitch and create more extension out front. Changeup shows good arm side run but is too hard, resembling fastball. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. A 2015 h.s. graduate, Samuel's stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
