Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • Position Projection

01/15/2016 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Obrien is a young two way player out of Wisconsin's 2018 class. Defensively, at 3B, he controls his body well, uses proper footwork and has a clean exchange to throw. Has a good loose, athletic body that carries onto the mound. A repeatable delivery with clean controlled technique allow him to be efficient as a RHP. His fastball topped at 77 mph and he mixed speeds well with his CB. Given that he has three HS seasons left, he should develop into a nice two way player but projects really well as a CIF. At the plate, Sean is advanced for a 2018 player with a good athletic setup, quiet load that allows him to create leverage and shows the ability to drive the baseball into the gaps.

05/17/2015 - College PREP - Brookfield (Milwaukee), WI Sean continues to show as a 3B/RHP and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. On the mound is where he has improved the most. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 82 mph. Fastball showed a range of 74-82 mph. Breaking ball shows potential as being a quality pitch, displaying 11/5 shape with tight spin and late breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.15. At 3B, he utilizes his quick feet well in lateral movement, displaying range. He attacks balls, plays through well and presents sure hands well out front. At the plate, he continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he works to use his lower half more. Sean has a ton of potential with the makings of a special type player as he continues to improve.

12/27/2014 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Sean is a very promising 3B/RHP that has a very effective, deceptive delivery. He topped out at 75 with his fastball, spun an 11/5 CB, and showed feel for a CH with arm side run. He is very controlled with his mechanics and fires a quick arm to delivery with fluidity. Becoming more consistent from the stretch and staying directional will improve control and command. Defensively, he made plays with ready hands in front and was soft with the glove to secure the ball. He worked to consistently stay low to field and use his legs to throw. Adding agility work to speed up his feet and arm strength will increase play ability. In the box, he displayed fluidity to hit with a controlled load and direct path to ball. He is a contact type hitter that stays in the middle of the field and with more reps will enhance feel to hit. In all - Sean is a standout freshman that has a lot of potential and projection at either position in the future.

03/16/2014 - National Tryout - Kenosha, WI Sean continues to be an athletic two-way player (SS/RHP). At the plate, he improved from the last time we evaluated, especially his swing path being more direct to contact/ level through the zone. He shows he can pull by utilizing his lower half and ability to use the whole field. Defensively, Sean continues to have good pre-pitch ready position/good footwork quickness. He fields out in front with a clean exchange on the routine plays. On the mound, Sean shows a consistent 12-6 curveball, but has to work on maintaining arm speed. Sean improved his direction to plate by maintain good rhythm/timing/separation and more importantly rotating to target/chest forward on finish. Sean is a talented young two-way player that continues to improve in his game on the mound, at the plate, and in the field.

09/08/2013 - Interactive Video Program - Oak Creek (Milwaukee), WI Sean is an athletic, 2-way player who plays SS and RHP. Defensively, Sean has sure hands, good pre-pitch actions, and he fields athletically on the balls of his feet. He has a clean exchange, and throws with a loose arm action with life to his target. On the mound, Sean works in good rhythm, he has proper separation, and he lands in a sound position. At the plate, Sean has a tall / open stance, a square stride, and good balance. He has quick hands, fast bat speed, and he can spray to all fields. Abilities can improve if Sean can work on the following.

Defense
1. Finish throws
2. Better angles to ball
Pitching
1. Finish
2. More stride
3. Lengthen arm action
Offense
1. Stride sooner
2. Level off swing
3. Barrel accuracy

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
