Official Scouting Report

  • SS/OFPosition Projection

07/09/2018 - College PREP - Portland, ME Shamus is an athletic player who plays SS, OF, and RHP. At SS, Shamus has quick/fluid feet, soft hands, and he moves with good agility to the ball. He attacks aggressively, has a quick/clean exchange, and he throws with accuracy from a quick release to his target. In the OF, Shamus has active feet, he reads the ball off the bat well, and fields aggressively. He has soft hands and an accurate arm with carry to his cutoff man. OF skills can get better if Shamus can work behind the ball sooner and play more through. On the mound, Shamus has a clean arm action, good glove side lead, and a controlled landing with a complete finish toward home. Offensively, Shamus has an athletic setup, a strong base, and he swings in good rhythm. He has a direct barrel to the ball, he makes square contact, and can spray to all fields.

03/25/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Middletown (Hartford), CT Shamus changed positions and was evaluated in the outfield for this event, while also remaining a pitcher. In the outfield, Shamus shows active feet, aggressively covering ground and centering himself behind the ball to make plays, getting into a square fielding position. He showed clean exchanges into a long, loose arm action throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot. Shamus uses his body momentum to throw the ball on a line. He will make more plays with a quicker exchange and getting the ball more in the air on his throws. At the plate, Shamus showed a spray type approach. He showed a closed set up with a good load, keeping his back side engaged and keeping his hands inside the ball. His fast bat speed and direct swing path allows him to hit the ball square (hit 9/12 hard). Shamus will see more pop with a wider base and a more fluid weight transfer. On the mound, Shamus continued to show good mechanics with a high 3/4 arm slot, also improving his velocity from the last event. His CB showed bite with an 11/5 shape. Shamus did not show a CH for this event but added a SL to his arsenal. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Shamus.

05/14/2017 - College PREP - Poughkeepsie, NY Shamus continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.15. At the plate, he improved hitting abilities/power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently. In the MIF, he displays smooth/clean actions. Feet are aggressive as he works to square balls up through a low approach but will benefit by playing through balls more with his body. Glove action is soft but will benefit by presenting more out front. On the mound, delivery is sound/repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point and throws from a high 3/4 arm slot. Fastball showed a range of 70-73 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for pitch with sinking action. He throws a slider that resembles his breaking ball. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

12/27/2016 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Shamus showed at 2B and on the mound for the first time at the event. At 2B, feet are active as he works to square balls up. Hands are clean but needs to present earlier and attack balls more to continue to improve defensive grade. At the plate he shows an athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through an aggressive approach. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 72-73 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 12/5 shape with loopy break. Control is a plus as he throws a ton of strikes, working to get ahead of hitters. He is aggressive and shows good mound presence. Mental makeup is a plus as he is coachable, plays hard, and is a great team player.

05/29/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Wappinger Falls, NY Biggs continues to work hard on his game. With the bat, this RHH has a square/athletic setup with rhythm to load. He gets good hand separation in his load, swings on a level path and squares the ball up. Engaging more of his lower 1/2 will help to increase more power at the plate. At 3B, Shamus shows active prep and works around the GB into a square fielding position. He gathers well and gains ground toward his target. In the OF, Biggs hustles to his right and left to track down fly-balls. Arm is loose with accurate throws into his target. Working behind and through the ball more will help to get more into his throws. Only a 2019 grad - Biggs has tools with still a lot of time to progress.

11/05/2015 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Shamus is an athletic INF who shows his love for the game every time he take the field. With the bat, this RHH has a square setup with patience, waiting for his pitch. He battles and works deep into the count, as he walked 3 times at the event. Swing is level and repeatable as he squares the ball up and works to drive the middle of the field. More extension through contact will result in increased power. Defensively, Biggs has active prep and moves well on the balls of his feet. He is aggressive and comes to get the GB, squaring up to it and tracking it into his mitt. He funnels smoothy and has a clean exchange to throw. Shamus is a coachable player who has a willingness to learn. A 2019 grad - he still has a ton of time to develop his skills and physically mature.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
