Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/1BPosition Projection

10/21/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Conroe (Houston), TX Shawn is a lean and athletic 2019 utility prospect. In the OF, Shawn is aggressive on ground balls and fields the ball in an athletic position. He makes the routine play and accurate throws to the plate. At 1B, Shawn is on time with his prep step and works off the bag well. He presents a low/early glove, and has accurate double play feeds. At the plate, Shawn starts in an open stance and gets his front foot down on time. He has a middle approach, stays balanced thru contact, and drives the ball to all fields. Shawn will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

04/29/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Katy (Houston), TX Shawn is a RHP/1B graduating in 2019. At the plate, Shawn shows a contact approach through a square, athletic set up and a short, square stride with a good load, resulting in a direct swing path. Shawn could see more consistently hard contact by developing more rhythm and utilizing more of his lower half. In the field, Shawn shows consistency from his last event, making the routine plays and making clean exchanges into his throws. Shawn throws from a high 3/4 arm slot and makes accurate throws to his targets using his body's momentum to throw the ball on a line. With more efficient feet, Shawn could reach more difficult plays in the field along with getting into more of an athletic fielding position. On the mound, Shawn throws three pitches (FB, CB and CH) from a high 3/4 arm slot. He shows good mechanics gathering over the rubber and separating on time. Shawn shows good extension through the zone, staying square to his target and controlling his landing with proper stride length, rotating to his target when finishing. Shawn could see more velocity and accuracy by implementing a long toss program. With more development to his game, Shawn could play at the next level.

01/12/2018 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Shawn is a hardworking 1B/RHP prospect who has a versatile skill set. Offensively, Shawn has an athletic stance with a centered balance. He has smooth rhythm with a good load and long stride as his lower half leads his swing. Shawn has a direct swing path consistently landing the barrel to the baseball. He is a line drive type hitter who always gives a good AB. In the field, Shawn makes the routine plays and works with firm footwork. He creates effective angles and fields the ball in a square position. Shawn does a nice job funneling and has a clean exchange. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot showing strong, accurate throws across the diamond. On the mound, Shawn has a balanced, on-time delivery throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot. He stays square to home plate with the proper stride length and a controlled landing. He has some feel for pitching and shows good composure. Overall, Shawn knows how to play the game and with development can advance his game to the next level.

10/22/2017 - College PREP - Conroe (Houston), TX Shawn is a tall, lean RHP/1B who will graduate in 2019. At the plate is where he shows best through a tall setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. At 1B, he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are active and he displays proper footwork around the bag. Glove action is soft but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 59-61 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break and loose spin. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Shawn has abilities with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
