Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

01/16/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Mesa (Phoenix), AZ Shawn is a tall 2020 RHP/3B prospect with long levers that he uses on the mound and at the plate. He shows off a strong arm both on the mound and at the hot corner with a clean strong and whip on his release. He features a fastball with run and sink, a 10-4 curve and a low 60's changeup with sink from a low 3/4 arm slot with good deception. He has a clean delivery and his live arm leads to good deception and command of all of his pitches. At the hot corner, he shows smooth actions with a quick first step and fields in an athletic position. His hands are soft to pick hard hit balls down the line and he has a clean exchange and gains ground to his target to throw accurately. At the dish, he loads to a vertical stack and gets his front foot down on time to launch. He shows a middle approach and keeps his head down through his swing with an incorporated lower half to make contact and put the ball in play. Shortening his swing path will lead to more consistent contact and base hits in the future. Shawn is an interesting prospect who we look forward to continue watching develop.

07/10/2016 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Shawn continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At 3B, defensive abilities have improved, displaying smooth actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and squares up well with his body. Hands are clean as he presents on time and out front. He shows off his athletic ability on his feeds of the double play. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. At the plate, hitting / power potential has improved through an athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through an uphill swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. At the event, he was a perfect 3 for 3. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 62-66 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving abilities on the mound. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be. With 4 years to further develop, Shawn has the makings of a special type player as he continues to progress.

04/24/2016 - Interactive Video Program - Phoenix, AZ Shawn is a L/R 2-way player as a RHP/3B who has a tall build. With the bat, this LHH shows a balanced setup with a solid base. He swings on a level path and drives the ball back up the middle of the field. At 3B - Shawn displays active footwork and hustles into a square fielding position behind the GB. He tracks the ball into his mitt and has a smooth exchange to throw. On the mound, this RHP has a 3-pitch mix (FB, CB, CH) coming from a high 3/4 arm slot. He works to a controlled balance point, has smooth separation and works in-line toward the dish. FB ranges from 67-68 mph while showing slight tail. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape while his changeup shows some movement. He works he zone and is around the plate with all of his pitches. Overall abilities will continue to improve as he works on the following.

Offense
1. Swing path
2. Contact points
3. Relax/loosen grip
Defense
1. Work from the ground-up
2. Glove presentation
3. Play through ball
Pitching
1. Arm strength (long toss)
2. More lower 1/2 drive off of the rubber
3. Finish with extension

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
