01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Skylar is a lean, athletic shortstop who demonstrated five well above average tools at the Under Armour All America Pre-Season Tournament. The senior ran a 6.77 60 yd, and showed more power in the bat than we have seen previously. In the infield, he has soft hands and smooth actions overall. He plays low and his arm is loose with plenty of carry. Would like to see him play through the ball more. Offensively, he has excellent bat speed and loose hands through the swing. Lower half rotates effectively and he has a nice feel for the barrel overall. Gets around the baseball at times when he tries to drive the ball. Needs to control his effort some, stay in line with his stride foot, and stay in the big part of the field. Toolsy kid with a nice idea with the glove and the bat. Should make a nice college player.

07/29/2012 - Under Armour Southwest Regional Tournament Mercado continues to show outstanding abilities at SS with the makings to be a special type player at the next level. He utilizes his quick/athletic feet well in attacking ground balls and playing through well. Hands are soft / clean / sure as he presents well out front. He shows big play potential in the MIF. Throws are accurate with life and on line carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, hitting / power grades are now outstanding through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed to and through the ball at contact. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 5 for 10. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and is a hard worker with a lot of positive energy.

07/23/2012 - 2012 Team One Northeast Showcase Skylar is a lean and athletic shortstop with a great arm. In the infield, he has fluid footwork and soft hands that allow him to look very natural at his position. His defensive skills should continue to develop as he learns to minimize his footwork when throwing, to help him get rid of the baseball. At the plate, he has an athletic setup and quick hands that allow him to posses an aggressive mentality. His offensive tools should continue to improve as he learns to work downhill and through contact. As a 2013 graduate, Skylar has the opportunity to continue to develop his skills in preparation for the next level.

02/26/2012 - College PREP - Brentwood (Long Island), NY Skylar is a tall/solid SS who has good athletic ability. Defensively, displays athletic fielding position, agile range, and fluid footwork. Is light on feet and makes plays smoothly through soft/sure hands. Has good arm strength making accurate throws to target. Offensively, shows a square/open setup, weight back load, and short stride. Has quick hands and fast bat speed, spraying the ball to all fields. Fluid rhythm but late at times. Skylar should get looks to play at the next level with his abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
