Official Scouting Report

  • 5Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

06/02/2019 - College PREP - River Forest (Chicago), IL Smerlyn is a tall RHP prospect who will graduate in 2020. On the mound, Smerlyn gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a loose arm and extends through his release, staying inline towards the plate. Smerlyn shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 78mph with sinking action. Breaking ball sits from 62-64mph with 11-5 break. Changeup sits from 66-68mph with tailing action. Smerlyn can improve as a pitcher by long tossing to build up his arm strength. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a tall stance and takes aggressive hacks. He works to barrel up the baseball and drives the ball up the middle. Working a smoother load into his swing can help Smerlyn improve as a hitter. Overall, Smerlyn is a solid prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
