Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

11/09/2014 - National Tryout - Middletown, CT On the mound, fastball shows a range of 61-64 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and works to throw more strikes.

01/17/2014 - Baseball Factory Spring Training at Pirate City Spencer is a hard worker who brings his competitive nature to the field. He has a high baseball IQ and is always thinking one play ahead. Behind the dish, he displays quick footwork with the ability to get around pitches in the dirt, blocking them and centering them off of his chest. He shows athletic actions and good hop. Offensively, Spencer maintains good balance with his open stance. Barrel delivery is quick/short with plus bat speed. He creates consistent contact and hits the ball on a line (going god 3 for 5 with 3 singles and 2 walks). Buckley (only a 2017 grad) has a solid skill-set and will only get better.

11/17/2013 - College PREP - Middletown, CT Buckley is a 2-way player (C/OF) who has a solid frame. Offensively, he shows a simple approach with good rhythm getting back into a loaded position. He delivers the barrel quickly on a level path and shows some pop, hitting line-drives. Staying back and avoiding the weight drift forward will help to get the most out of his lower 1/2. Defensively behind the plate, he sits in well and presents a low target. When throwing to 2B he has a clean exchange and works in-line. A quicker exchange and increased arm strength will help to lower pop times. In the OF, he shows good prep and works to get behind the fly-ball. He is aggressive and comes to get the ground ball, fielding it outside and playing through well. Loosening up his actions will help to improve skills in the OF. Spencer is only a freshman and still has a lot of time to work on and develop his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
