Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

06/18/2016 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Spencer continues to show solid play in his baseball abilities. On the mound, he hides the ball well with the fastball as he topped out at 78 mph. Fastball shows plus arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He competes on the mound with stock on the mound improving as he builds more arm strength. He fields his position well and does a nice job of backing up bases. He replaces his feet well on the pickoff and keeps runners close. At 3B, feet are active as he displays proper footwork and displays soft / sure hands. He funnels smoothly with a quick exchange to throw. Increasing foot quickness will aid in improving lateral range. At the plate, he shows a soft/athletic setup. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently. This 2018 grad has tools with still time to progress to get to where he wants to be.

04/10/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Greensboro, NC Spencer continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. On the mound is where he has improved the most. Arm strength is now solid as indicated by his top velocity of 79 mph. Fastball showed a range of 77-79 mph with good arm side run. Breaking ball is a solid pitch, displaying 11/5 shape with tight spin and late breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Control is solid as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. At 3B, he shows smooth / fluid actions. Feet are active / aggressive as he attacks balls and moves well laterally. Glove action is clean and he shows good body control. Presenting his glove more out in front will help to avoid getting the in between' hop. Continuing to increase foot quickness will aid in improving range. At the plate, hitting / power abilities have improved through a squared setup. Hands are loose and work inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Swing path is level as he shows a line drive type approach. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively.

07/30/2013 - National Tryout - Raleigh, NC Spencer worked out both on the mound and at 3B during his time in Raleigh, NC. On the hill, Spencer showed a free / loose arm, a controlled balance point, and he keeps his eyes on target. He has level shoulders, good direction toward home, and he repeats his delivery well. At 3rd base, Spencer has active feet, soft hands, and he squares up well to the ball. He fields out front and gets ride of the ball quickly with accuracy to his target. Offensively, Spencer has good balance, a square set-up, and he makes consistent contact. He swings in good rhythm, has a level path, and he uses some lower 1/2.

11/15/2012 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Spencer did a very nice job at Pirate City. On the mound he displayed a very good set up, repeatable mechanics, good mound presence and he takes feedback and uses it to his advantage. He needs to be more direct to target on his CB and use his lower half more from the stretch. Long toss and the towel drill will help Spencer with his velocity and overall mechanics/arm action. As a fielder he works around the ball well, plays through well and fields the ball out front but he needs to get lower in his fielding position, work on his backhand and polish his overall approach. At the plate he has an aggressive approach, decent balance and barrel accuracy but his lower half is anchored and needs to be more direct to the ball. Spencer did a good job at making adjustments to his game while at Pirate City. If he continues to do that he will become an even better player in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
