Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Stephen participated at both 3B and RHP at the UA Preseason All-America, and showed similar skills as he did in 6/09. At 3B, Stephen is fundamentally sound, in rhythm, and he moves well laterally. His hands are soft, he has an easy exchange, and his arm is accurate with carry. Defense can improve with quicker and lighter feet. Stephen has good mound presence and pitchability. He gets good extension, throws lots of strikes, and forces contact. Mechanics are sound with good balance, direction toward the plate, and good use of his legs. Added arm speed and strength will improve velocity and rise his stock on the mound. Offensively, Stephen has good balance and a proper load. He puts the ball in play, can hit to all fields, and shows signs of raw power. More consistent hands and avoiding over-swinging will only help offensive grades further improve.

06/03/2009 - Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament - 2009 Stephen improved hit hitting and power grades at this event. At the plate, show good plate coverage since he understands his strike zone. Had the ability to square up the ball and drive it to all fields. Had quick hands and a level, short swing that developed good bat speed. In the INF, showed strong accurate arm with quick release. Had above average instincts with the ability to move well laterally. Made all the routine plays. Needs to improve forward movement to play thru balls instead of waiting on ball. On the mound, he was a competitor. Had good mechanics that allowed him to attack the strike zone consistently. Had above average stuff with the ability to miss the barrel. Deception will improve when he keeps his arm speed the same for all pitches. He could be a possible two-way player at the next level.

08/31/2008 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Stephen improved his velocity, arm grade, and infield grade while at this event. At 3B, had good idea how to play the position. Was able to get rid of ball quickly and his accurate throws had carry. Showed good presentation and active feet while fielding the ball. Showed soft hands but fielded the ball little too deep. At the plate, had solid setup that led to good bat speed and utilized his lower half. He gets rotational at times which makes him spin off ball. When he stays thru ball, shows gap power to all fields. On the mound, had loose arm action with ability to hide the ball. Arm speed was the same for all his pitches. Would like to see him stay tall on backside to create more lower half explosion and create good downhill plane on pitches.

07/10/2008 - Cape Cod Training 2008 - Week 1 Evans once again showed as a capable offensive player. He hit from a balanced stance, and did a good job of working the barrel short to contact and long through it. When he stays back and uses his lower half, he has gap power with potential for more. Must work to be more consistent in this area, tends to collapse his back side and reach out front. Defensively, he fields the ball out front with good glove action. Showed some idea to make the backhand play, and was solid with his body control. Improvements to his overall quickness and agility are among his biggest areas for improvement. On the mound, his fastball was 75-77 and his breaking ball was mostly around 66. He was consistently around the strike zone with his fastball, and showed a solid overall delivery. Secondary pitches, both the action on them and his ability to use them, need the most work at this point. Overall, a solid offensive player with develop defensive skills and some potential on the mound.

06/19/2008 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - 2008 Stephen has excellent work habits and is very coachable. At the plate, Stephen has good bat speed with some pull-side pop. An aggressive hitter who works hard with 2 strikes. Learning to use the other side of the field will help improve situational hitting and overall hitting ability. In the INF, shows good body control with soft hands and easy arm actions. Following his throw to the target will help improve accuracy of throws. On the mound, had decent direction to the plate and attacks each hitter. Long toss will help improve arm speed and velo.

12/27/2007 - Christmas Camp and Tournament - 2007 Evans is a young player with a well rounded set of skills and abilities. At the plate, he showed good presence and a good overall hitting approach. His path was mostly level and he showed some bat speed through the hitting zone, tends to collapse back side and lift some - not necessarily a problem since he has some power potential and does not run well. Good combination of hitting skills and power potential. Defensively, he showed good glove action and solid footwork along with a very accurate arm. Can improve overall quickness and agility. A strike thrower on the mound that changes speeds and uses his breaking ball well. Have seen him throw harder, but each time we have seen him on the mound he has shown a fearless approach and went right after hitters in the strike zone. Overall, has some two-way potential but it appears as if he will end up as a position player at the college level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
