Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

01/12/2018 - 2018 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Stephen is a 3B/RHP who is a prospect on the diamond. At the plate, he has strong/centered balance with fluid rhythm to load. He takes an absolute hack with gap-to-gap pop (exit velocity = 85 mph). In the 3B, he has plus lateral range, working from the ground-up with smooth actions. Transfer is quick as he fires strong throws zipping (87 mph velocity) across the diamond. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 83 mph. FB jumps out of his hand. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Control is outstanding as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stephen will play at a very high level and make an immediate impact.

10/22/2017 - College PREP - Potomac, MD Stephen showed well both on the mound and at 3B during his workout in Potomac. He currently projects best on the mound at the next level. Stephen touched 81 MPH with his FB, his arm action is clean, and he has good direction toward home. He has good size, gets extension on his pitches, and finishes completely. Stephen's CB and CH complement his FB well. At 3B, Stephen has active footwork, soft hands, and he moves with good agility to the ball. He centers the ball on his body, has a clean exchange, and a strong/accurate arm to his target. Offensively, Stephen is a strong hitter with good balance, and fast bat speed. He makes square contact and hits hard to the pull side.

12/27/2016 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Stephen is a tall and lean 3B/RHP, who in his time at Pirate City, was very coachable and open to learning many new things on the diamond. In the infield, he did a fine job of working athletically to the baseball and remaining low to field. Exchange after fielding was clean and throws were consistently accurate. Offensively, he displayed some good pop to his pull side through a tall/open stance and proved to be a tough strikeout at the dish (1 k in 8 plate appearances). Hands were loaded on time, however working to throw them directly at the baseball, and not casting the barrel of the bat, will improve power to all fields. Also a pitcher, he featured 3 pitches from an over the top arm angle, which was deceptive because of his great height. He showed a fastball that sat in the mid-70's, an 11-5 curveball which showed some late break, and a knuckleball which sat in the high 60's, was thrown with fastball arm speed, and had some late downward life to it. Overall, Stephen is a very physically tooled player, who with continued hard work and refinement of his overall game, will be a force on the diamond in years to come.

10/16/2016 - College PREP - Bel Air (Baltimore), MD Stephen is a tall, lean 3B/RHP who has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 60 time of 7.32. At 3B, defensive abilities are solid as he displays smooth / fluid actions. He gets around balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is soft / sure as he presents well out front. He moves well laterally, flashing range to both sides. At the plate he shows a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path with extension. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 70-72 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength which will aid in his development on the mound. Stephen has potential with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
