Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/2BPosition Projection

06/20/2009 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 2 Stephen still shows as a two way player on the mound and at 3B. Foot speed has improved as he cut 3 tenths off his 60, now an average runner at 7.50. He will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to continue to improve foot quickness. Defensive abilities have also improved now showing near above average abilities. He plays hard and is very coachable. He must get on a strict long toss program to aid in building more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, Richards showed the ability to get the barrel to and through the baseball at contact. He was 3 for 7 with 2 BB as he showed plate discipline.

12/27/2008 - Under Armour Recruiting Classic 2008 Stephen continues to show steady improvement in his baseball abilities. He continues to show as a two way player on the mound and at 2B. In the infield, he shows solid hands / glove action when presented out front and consistently makes all the plays. He showed range to the backhand side displaying a solid feel for and is not afraid to us his backhand. He does need to get on a strict long toss program to aid in developing more arm strength. At the plate, Richards shows a quiet set up and stance with balance. He works to keep hands inside the ball and utilizes the middle of the field. Hitting grades and power will improve quickly with instruction and adjustments at plate. Currently, he is late getting front foot down, causing him to rush his swing. On the mound, delivery has rhythm, tempo and in line direction to the plate. He mixes pitches well and maintains solid arm speed with all his pitches. He attacks hitters and pounds the strike zone. His stock on the mound will rise if more arm strength is developed. Stephen is very coachable and will make adjustments.

10/08/2008 - Florida National Tournament - 2008 Richards showed good feel for pitching, kept hitters off balance and didn't allow much solid contact. Can work to improve his delivery, some adjustments in his mechanics would help his consistency. Defensively, he showed soft hands and good mental toughness - wanted the ball, played hard and heady. Agility and overall quickness have room to improve, as does his routes to ground balls. At the plate, he was aggressive and showed good hands. Can work to track the ball better, and needs to keep the ball out of the air. Overall, a solid young pitching prospect.

03/30/2008 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA Stephen is a tall player and although he can play two positions, he is more suited for the infield at this time. At 2B, shows a quick release and stays down to field. Makes all the plays. Glove tends to get down late but hands are solid overall. Swing is quick from both sides of the plate. He is a little better from the right side as it uses the whole field and has more pop. The left side has a line drive approach but tries to pull too many pitches. On the mound, Stephen shows good arm action. Keeps the ball down in the zone. Control of all pitches must improve and a good long toss program should help increase velocity.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
