Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • CPosition Projection

11/20/2016 - College PREP - Pearland, TX Stephen continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate, feet are active as he gains ground and works through a clean / transfer exchange. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.28 with accuracy. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Hands are soft as he lets the ball travel and tracks well, sticking in the zone. He moves well laterally through the blocking process and creates good angles. At the plate, power potential has improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (82 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap to gap pop. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more efficiently. With 2 years to further develop, Stephen has a lot of potential with time and room to progress his game.

07/14/2015 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 2 Stephen showed as a C with a plus frame at the Cali Select Training & Competition with Baseball Factory. Offensively, he showed an ability to hit off his back side, generating momentum and pop with good bat speed. He had good rhythm and fluidity, with feel for the barrel. More extension with the top hand and more emphasis with the balls of his feet will increase pop to all fields. Defensively, he was athletic in his setup, sat with flexibility and secured the ball with a sure glove. He flashed pops in the 2.2 range and was on-time to block, centering the ball on his chest to deaden in front. Quicker actions and a smoother arm action to throw will help to boost feel and consistency, defensively. All in all - Stephen is a good follow that has present fundamentals with time to add strength.

05/10/2015 - College PREP - College Station, TX Stephen is a R/R catcher who has a projectable build (6'2"/170). Behind the dish, he sits in well with flexion and track pitches into his mitt. He works quickly around pitches in the dirt and centers the ball off of his chest. He has a quick exchange and makes accurate throws to 2B (pop times of 2.38). Times will continue to drop as he increases his arm strength through a long toss program. With the bat, this RH swinger shows a balanced approach with patience as he lets the ball travel into the zone. He hits the ball where it's pitched and extends through his finish. More lower 1/2 drive will result in increase power at the plate. Only a 2018 grad - Wake has skills with still time to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
