Official Scouting Report

  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Stephen is an athletic OF/LHP who continues to show well on the diamond. In the field, Stephen has active feet and moves to center the ball in the middle of his body. He gets into a square position and presents his hands out front to field. He has a clean exchange and gains momentum well on his throws which allows them to be consistently on-line to his target. At the plate, this switch hitter sets up in a square stance and shows good balance in the box. He shows smooth actions and comes through the zone with fast bat speed, leading to hard contact and power. On the mound, Stephen has a smooth, repeatable delivery and consistently keeps the ball down in the zone. His fastball tops out at 84mph with arm side tail. Breaking ball sits at 70mph with sharp, late 12-6 movement. Changeup tops out at 73mph with good cutting action as he throws with fastball arm speed. Overall, Stephen is a talented prospect who has the tools that will play at the next level.

06/14/2016 - 2016 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's National Florida Stephen continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a tremendous future on the diamond. At the plate is where he has improved the most, still showing as a switch hitter with similar abilities from both sides. Hands are quick (93 mph exit velocity) generating bat speed through a direct / level swing path. He has strength in his swing and works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields, displaying gap to gap pop. In the OF, he uses his quick / athletic feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls as he covers a lot of ground, displaying range. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process. On the bump, he had a solid showing at the event. He attacks hitters, throwing a lot of strikes as he works to get ahead of hitters through a quick tempo. Fastball showed in the low 80 range with solid arm side run. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with late break. With 2 years to further develop, Stephen will get looks from the top collegiate coaches with his baseball tools.

07/26/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Stephen is a young player who is a gamer and plays the game the right way. In the infield, he has a good fielding position on the balls of his feet. He has sure hands receiving the ball at 1B. Arm action is long with good life to his throws. He can work on his flexibility which will increase his ability to stretch for bad throws. On the mound, Stephen reaches a controlled balance point and separates on time. Tempo is fast but stays under control and creates some decent arm side run. He lands in an athletic fielding position, but he could be more aggressive with his arm action and finishing his pitches. At the plate, Stephen has a tall stance but gets loaded well and strides towards the pitcher. He has raw power and explosive bat speed complemented by a level path through the zone. He consistently squares the ball up and shows plus power potential. He can improve how efficient his lower half is. His legs are strong but they are not being used to the best of their ability. Overall, Stephen has lots of upside as he continues to refine his skills and it will be fun to watch as he progresses.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
