Official Scouting Report

  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

01/17/2020 - 2020 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Sterling showed very well at SS and on the mound at the Pre-Season AA. He raised arm velocity to 87 MPH, exit velocity to 92 MPH, and improved hitting numbers to 58's. Defensively, Sterling has quick feet, a soft/presentable glove, and he fields in good rhythm. He fields athletically, funnels well, and throws with plus arm strength across the diamond. On the mound, Sterling is a ground ball pitcher with good life on his FB, and it shows solid A/S run. He has good mechanics, a quick arm action, and he fields his position well. Offensively, Sterling stands in squarely, he has comfortable hands, and a good eye for the zone. He has explosive bat speed, he makes hard/loud contact, and he uses his lower body. Sterling is an exciting 2-way prospect at the next level!

12/27/2018 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Sterling is a solid, athletic SS who has a tremendous future on the diamond. Foot speed is outstanding as indicated by his 60 time of 6.71. At SS, defensive abilities are solid as he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls up and plays through with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and presents well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turn of the double play. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. Throws are accurate across the diamond as he gets rid of the baseball quickly but he will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting / power potential are outstanding through an open, athletic setup. Hands are quick (87 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields and has strength in his swing with gap-to-gap pop. At the event, he was 3 for 6 with a 2B. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable. With 2 years to further develop, Sterling has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
