Official Scouting Report

  • SS/2BPosition Projection

07/29/2015 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 17U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Steve is a hardworking SS/2B that is very coachable with the makings of a solid player at the next level. In the MIF, feet are active as he works around balls and plays through with his body. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process. He moves well laterally, displaying range in the MIF and shows big play potential. At the plate, hitting / power potential are solid as he has strength in his swing. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and works to stay inside the baseball, displaying gap to gap power. At the event, he was 2 for 7. Steve has a lot of potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

05/17/2015 - College PREP - Boise, ID Steve showed as a SS and on the mound for the first time at the event. Currently, he projects best at SS for the next level where he has a promising future. Feet are quick / aggressive as he moves well laterally, displaying range in the MIF. He works around balls, displaying soft / sure hands. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds of the double play. Throws are accurate, flashing carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he shows a balanced / squared approach and he tracks the ball well. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed to and through a level swing path, creating extension. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to stay inside the ball to utilize all fields. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 72-77 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on changeup with slight sink. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and develops better off speed stuff.

10/22/2014 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Steve proved again to have solid abilities on both sides of the ball in the tournament setting against strong competition. Offensively, he maintained his oppo approach, allowing the ball to travel deep to use all fields. He showed the ability to turn on inside pitches and drive them to left. He was coordinated with his hands & hips and continued to work on staying strong on his front side (eliminating lunging). Defensively, he moved well laterally and made plays with active feet. He had a good tempo to make plays and threw with fluidity and carry to his target. Overall - Steve has a good understanding of the process and will continue to strengthen as he gets to work over the next two years.

10/15/2014 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Steve continues to be a pleasure to work with as he shows improvement from event to event and is able to implement coaching immediately. Offensively, he tracked the ball well and got his hands in a good position to hit. He was quick to get the barrel down to the zone on a level path and was accurate in the delivery for hard contact. He flashed coordination with his hands and hips, but gets disconnected at times which will result in weaker contact. Defensively, he continues to excel with his sure hands and good exchange. He gains ground to make plays, recovers well, and stays low. Continuing to add arm strength and using his lower half to throw will increase play at short. In all - Steve is a prospect for the next level with his intangibles and play ability.

06/21/2014 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Steve is a hard worker who continues to improve. Defensively, this MIF works quickly and light of his feet. He has fluid actions and plays through the ball well. He shows his versatility as he can play any spot on the INF. At the plate, he displays patience as he tracks the ball into the zone. He waits for his pitch, delivers the barrel with quick hands and drives the ball. Steve is a very coachable player who has a willingness to learn. He makes adjustments quickly and has skills that project well.

05/18/2014 - College PREP - Boise, ID Steve is a lean, athletic SS that will graduate in 2016. At the plate is where he shows best displaying solid hitting abilities with outstanding power grades through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path and make consistent hard contact as he works to stay inside the ball utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with baseball exploding off the bat when centered. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.20 60 time. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in his lateral movement, displaying range. Hands are soft / clean as he presents out front and shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turns of the double play. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Steve has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

01/17/2014 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Steve continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time, now an above average runner at 7.25. Feet are active as he works to square up balls, displaying clean hands. He moves well laterally, displaying in the MIF. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he attacks balls, plays through, and presents hands more out front. Throws are accurate, but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows an aggressive approach through a balanced setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact with hitting grades improving as he works to get stride foot down sooner and keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will increase as he learns to use his lower half more. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude and works hard to be the best player he can be.

10/23/2013 - Arizona Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic Steve continues to show solid abilities in his game. In the middle INF, he shows good leadership and takes charge, communicating well. He moves well pre-pitch and gets into an athletic fielding position. He has a clean exchange and can turn the DP quickly. At the plate, Zorich maintains good balance and gets back into a loaded position. He is selective and waits on his pitch. He is short and quick to the ball, hitting line-drives to all fields. With increased strength and more use of his lower 1/2, power at the plate will climb. As only a sophomore, Steve will only continue to get better.

07/24/2013 - California Select Training & Competition (Ages 14-18) Steve is young SS that will graduate in 2016. At the plate is where he shows best through an athletic setup. He loads well and attacks the baseball through an aggressive approach. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. At the event, he was 4 for 6 with a 2B. Feet are active as he attacks ground balls and plays through with his body, displaying clean hands. He displays fluid actions through the fielding process and moves well laterally, especially to his backhand side. For defensive grade continues to improve, he needs to improve foot quickness and present hands more out front. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker and is very coachable. With 3 years to further develop, Steve has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
