In Smallwood's latest Factory outing he flashed pop-times in the low 2's - 2.00 best. Defensively, he has good hands, catches clean, has active feet, and good presence. He gets down in-time to block and has good carry on his throws. Offensively, he has good balance, generates fast bat speed and has good rhythm. He jumped on the bump during late in the tournament and pounded the zone - throwing three pitches for strikes. He is a fierce competitor in either position and has high energy. In all, Chase is a great kid that has passion for the game and is very talented and coachable.
05/12/2013 - National Tryout - Glen Allen (Richmond), VA
Smallwood showed as a catcher and on the mound for the first time at the event but currently projects best behind the plate at the next level where he has improved his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.26 runner. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in working in line to his target through a quick, transfer exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest pop time to date at 2.00. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup with balance. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. For grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to stay inside the ball to utilize all fields. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 76-79 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with fading action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

Chase is a solid, tall catcher with a strong lower half that will graduate in 2014. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 7.38 60 time. Feet are active, working in line through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times showed a range of 2.14-2.24 with accuracy / carry on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he works to get rid of the baseball quicker. Receiving / blocking skills shows as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, Smallwood shows a solid setup with balance and rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path with solid barrel accuracy. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered as he uses his lower half well. Chase has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.
