04/05/2009 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Steven is a RHP/OF who shows lots of potential to be very good. As a P, Steven throws over the top and shows better than average control and proper pitching mechanics. He showcases a strong arm, gets balanced at the top of delivery, he has glove side pull to allow for more throwing arm extension, and he has an upbeat tempo to keep his teammates on their toes. Schafer would benefit from elevating and loading the hip more, landing on a bent knee to allow for even more arm extension, and keeping front shoulder closed. In the OF, Steven has life in his arm, has quick feet, takes good routes to the fly ball, and plays through ground ball nicely. He would benefit from developing more preliminary movement for ultimate range, he tends to back pedal, and not get behind the fly ball enough. At the plate, Schafer has an adequate load of the hands; he throws his hips and barrel for power, and uses all fields nicely. To become an even better hitter, Steven would benefit from widening his stance for ultimate body use, using more top hand to drive the ball, and keeping his head and front side in on baseball.
