Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/OFPosition Projection

12/27/2008 - Under Armour Recruiting Classic 2008 Steven continues to show steady improvement in his play, especially on the mound. Arm strength has improved but does need to stay on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength. Fastball shows solid arm side run with deception. Breaking ball displays late breaking action and is solid average. As arm strength continues to develop so will his stock on the mound. He ran his best 60 time to date at 7.22. He utilized his improved foot speed to cover ground in the OF, displaying range. He shows solid instincts and reads balls well off the bat. At the plate, hitting grades and power are now solid average. He works to keep hands inside the baseball, utilizing entire field. Stout is now a class 5 player.

06/15/2008 - College PREP - San Jose, CA Steven shows as a two way player on the mound and in the outfield. Foot speed is solid average and he does move well in the outfield. He does need some instruction and polish in taking better routes and angles in working to get behind the baseball to play through with momentum to his target. Arm strength is average and he needs to get on a strict long toss program to further aid in the building of arm strength for both positions. At the plate, Steven shows average ability with solid average power. He does a nice job of clearing and rotating his lower half through the swing, remaining balanced. Bat speed is a plus but swing path does get uphill causing him to get under a lot of pitches. He does have potential at the plate with some adjustments. On the mound, Stout displays some sink in his fastball. Off speed pitches are above average. Command is solid with all his pitches. If arm strength is developed he could be a solid LHP. He is young, 2010 graduate that has a lot of potential ability.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
