Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

01/16/2015 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Vanderzwet showed only as a RHP at the event. Arm action is quick, loose and works well to the plate as he hides the ball well. Fastball showed a range of 79-83 mph with sinking action. Off speed pitches show potential as being quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. He shows off his athletic abilities as he fields his position well and shows a promising future on the mound.

07/30/2014 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Stephen continues to show plus tools across the board. In the OF, he utilizes his feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and works to get behind, playing through well with momentum to his target. Arm strength is at a near pro level as he topped out at 89 mph at the arm strength station. Throws display life, accuracy and on line carry to his target. At the plate, he shows a squared / balanced setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a level swing path. Barrel accuracy is a plus with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. At the event, he was 5 for 11. On the mound, fastball showed solid arm side run with an 11/5 breaker with late breaking action. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

06/21/2014 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Stephen is an exciting player to watch. His all-around skill-set stand out from the rest. On the bump, FB now cracks the mitt at 87 mph as he throws a heavy ball. Breaking ball compliments FB well with 12/6 action and sharp break. He pounds the zone, attacking hitters and throwing strikes. With the bat, this smooth swinging lefty shows good rhythm as he works back into a strong loaded position. He is aggressive and takes a hack, utilizing his lower 1/2 well and driving the ball with pop. This run producer puts the barrel on the ball and makes things happen (collecting 6 hits at the event, 2 doubles and 4 singles). In the OF, he shows solid prep footwork as he moves well into position behind the fly-ball. Ball is quick from glove to hand as he has a cannon for an arm (89 mph). Steven has a high ceiling with a bright future ahead of him in the game.

03/16/2014 - College PREP - Bowie, MD Steven is a L/R RHP that will graduate in 2015. On the bump, he threw 4 pitches with free arm action and a repeatable delivery. He was around the zone with all of his pitches with plus control over his CB and CH. He topped out at 81 MPH with his FB and has more in the tank when he begins to use more of his lower half and strengthens through a long toss program. Offensively, he showed an ability to swing it with gap pop and plus bat speed. He was quick twitch and direct to the ball with good hand/hip coordination. In all - Steven projects as an athletic player that can hit and pitch with good feel for 3 of his 4 pitches.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
