Official Scouting Report

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Tanner is a thick, strong, athletic player who continues to show progress in his baseball abilities. He fields the baseball cleanly, out in front of his body. His glove is soft, and his feet work well. His arm is strong and accurate to his target. Abilities in the INF can improve by keeping his front side closed and quickening his feet a bit. At the plate is where Tanner showed improvement from 8/09. He improved both his hitting and power grades from 48 to 50. Tanner's balance and bat speed are good, and he has a line drive approach. His swing is short / compact, and he has a solid feel for the barrel of the bat. If Tanner can loosen his shoulders, soften his load, and let the ball travel deeper, Offensive numbers could continue to improve.

08/30/2009 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Tanner continues to show solid play in his baseball abilities. In the IF, hands and feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. He shows off his athletic abilities on slow rollers as he maintains body control and makes the play. Glove action is soft, clean, and sure in making all the plays. Behind the plate, pop times showed a range of 2.19-2.27 through a quick transfer and exchange. At the plate, Ashcraft continues to show near above average abilities and power through a balanced approach. Swing path is level as he shows a solid feel for the barrel. Bat speed is maintained to and through the baseball at contact with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Tanner has the makings to be a solid player at the collegiate level.

06/03/2009 - Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament - 2009 Tanner is a young athletic player who can contribute at the next level. He has quickness in the infield as his 7.09 60-time indicates. He can turn double plays well and he has above average instincts defensively. Tanner's arm is also above average as he can throw out any runner at the deepest part of the position. Tanner can also catch and has the quickness and build to do so in college. He has soft hands and a quick transfer and release. At the plate, Tanner has bat speed and power to the pull side. He needs to be a little more patient at the plate and hit the ball where it is pitched. Tanner should impress a lot of coaches next season.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
