Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • C/RHPPosition Projection

10/23/2016 - College PREP - Georgetown, KY Tanner showed as a catcher and on the mound. Behind the plate, feet are aggressive and active as he works in line to his target, through a clean transfer/exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times showed in the 2.14 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving/blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level as he continues to develop. At the plate, he shows an open setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive path. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 74-76 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 3/9 shape with across break. He shows good tailing action on his changeup but slows arm stroke, tipping off his pitch to hitters. Building more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in further development on the mound.

09/20/2015 - College PREP - Knoxville, TN Tanner continues to show a promising future behind the dish with improvements in his baseball tools. At the plate is where he has improved the most through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through and through a level swing path, creating extension. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest pop time to date at 2.03 as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with life, accuracy, and carry on his throws. Blocking / receiving skills have improved as well, showing as quality tools that will play well at the next level.

06/01/2014 - National Tryout - Knoxville, TN Tanner showed improvements in his arm strength, pop times, and defensive grades during his last workout in Nashville. His pop times are not 2.09 to 2.18 and his arm showed quick, efficient action with good carry. Tanner has a good set-up, he blocks and receives well, and he has a clean transfer and exchange to 2nd base. At the plate, Tanner has an aggressive swing, a square stride, and good balance. He has loose hands, and a direct barrel to the ball.

01/13/2012 - Tampa Spring Training Tanner is an athletic 2017 graduate who is a RHP and plays OF. He has slightly above average arm strength and he is accurate to his target but it will benefit him raise his arm angle in the outfield from side arm to over the top and get on/or continue on a long toss program. On the mound Tanner showed good arm action, solid overall mechanics and a FB with a lot of movement. He needs to be more consistent from the wind-up (solid from stretch), develop his off-speed pitches and gain more command of his pitches. In the outfield he showed solid hands, efficient footwork and good lateral agility but he needs to take better angles and be more aggressive. Again, he makes strong/accurate throws but he needs to get on top of the ball in order to get carry. At the plate Tanner has a short stride, timing is good and he has a level swing path. He needs to develop a smoother load (without dropping his hands or barring his arm), use his lower half more and let the ball travel into the proper hitting zones. If Tanner makes the proper adjustments he can be a very solid player in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
