05/04/2014 - College PREP - Adrian (Detroit), MI Tanner continues to shine. He has a strong arm and quick actions, with pop times still in the mid 1.9's. Runners will not want to test his cannon for an arm. At the plate, a simple approach with rhythm allows him to work back into a strong loaded position. Barrel delivery is quick with plus bat speed, driving the ball with pop. A skilled player - Tanner will make an impact every time he steps onto the diamond.

01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Tanner continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities behind the plate. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in working in line through a quick transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 1.95. Arm strength has improved as well with accuracy, life, and on line carry through his target as he displays a superior arm. He will control the running game with his feet and arm. Receiving / blocking skills are outstanding tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off bat when centered. At the event, he drew 4 BB as he shows a strong recognition of the strike zone and is patient at the plate.

10/16/2013 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Kaplan continues to show as a solid catcher behind and at the plate. He shows plus leadership qualities and is vocal behind the plate. Pop times were in the 2.13 range with accuracy and carry on his throws through a quick / clean release. Receiving / blocking skills are quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, Tanner shows an open / athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He uses his lower half well and shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude and is a great teammate who wants to do well.

09/15/2013 - College PREP - Adrian, MI In Tanner's latest outing, he flashed his lowest pop to date - 1.97 seconds. His flexibility, active feet and sure hands make him a solid defender. While his offensive game continues to show improvements with added bat speed and good rhythm. He is aggressive in his middle approach and he will continue to gain pop with physical maturity. In all, Kaplan is very projectable and continues to show growth in his game.

05/05/2013 - College PREP - Adrian, MI Tanner has improved his receiving / blocking skills, now showing as outstanding tools that will play well at the next level. He displays an athletic setup and moves well behind the dish. Pop times showed a range of 2.12-2.25 as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Times will continue to drop as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. At the plate, power numbers have really improved as he delivers the barrel well through a squared / athletic setup. He works to stay inside the ball through an aggressive approach.

12/27/2012 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament Tanner showed well both offensively and defensively during his time in Pirate City. At the plate, Tanner has an athletic set-up, a smooth load, and fast bat speed. He makes consistent contact, has a line drive swing, and he can hit to all fields. Behind the plate, Tanner has sure hands, active feet, and he blocks well. He communicates well and his arm has accuracy to 2nd base

09/16/2012 - College PREP - Adrian (Detroit), MI Tanner is a player who continues to show the ability to make adjustments and get better. His pop times have improved, now ranging from 2.15-2.25 with a quick/clean exchange and quick feet. He can continue to work on squaring his front shoulder to his target to improve accuracy on his throws. At the plate, Tanner's lower half looks strong with good balance and an aggressive approach. His load looks smooth but can focusing on letting the ball travel so he will have the ability to use the entire field. With three years to further develop, Tanner shows the ability and work ethic to play at the next level.

08/06/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Kaplan continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest to date at 2.20. His feet work in line to his target through a clean / transfer exchange. Times showed in a range of 2.20 - 2.40 with times continuing to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools at the next level as he continues to improve. At the plate, Tanner shows a solid setup with balance. His hands work through a level swing path and he makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep his hands inside the ball to utilize all fields.

07/07/2012 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Kaplan continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. He shows an athletic setup behind the plate with feet working in line to his target. Pop times were in the 2.36 range with accuracy on his throws. He needs to build more arm strength and work to get rid of the ball quicker to continue to lower times. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools at the next level as he continues to improve. At the plate, Tanner shows a solid setup with rhythm. Swing path is level but needs to work on keeping hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and improve hitting grades. Lower half works well through the swing with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Mental makeup is a plus as he plays hard with high energy and is very coachable.

04/29/2012 - College PREP - Adrian (Detroit), MI Tanner is a young catcher that will graduate in 2015. Behind the plate, he shows good flexibility, a low target, and has good sway to receive. He shows sure hands, a clean exchange to throw, and good accuracy to second. He tracks the ball well showing quick feet to block and a soft chest to keep the ball close. Gaining ground towards second base, more arm strength, and quickness to throw will help him continue to lower his pop times to second. At the plate, he shows a square stance with a short stride and good bat speed through the zone. He keeps his head still and is quiet during his stride. A better pre-pitch load, level swing path to help with extension and getting his from foot down earlier are all areas to work on to improve his offensive game. Tanner is very young and has some tools to work with, overall strength and quickness will help him continue to develop.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
