Official Scouting Report

  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

12/27/2015 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Tanner competed as both a SS/RHP at the Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic. On the mound, he threw a FB with run, and spun an 11/5 CB - both for strikes. He showed an ability to gather himself over the rubber for balance, and separated on-time to give way to his delivery. His lower half worked well for him and he got over his front side to finish his pitches. He made adjustments to maintain his arm speed and progressed throughout the course of the camp. Defensively at short, he worked to center the ball and made decent plays on the run. He worked to improve his glove feel and his approach during drills - presenting the glove earlier and becoming more aggressive with his first step. Offensively, he tracked the ball well with a quiet head and worked gap to gap with his approach. He rotated his core to generate torque and bat whip, and began to control his top hand in drills for added extension. In all - Tanner is entering his senior season ready to make a difference in all areas of the diamond.

08/09/2015 - College PREP - Great Falls, MT Tanner is a R/R 2-way player (RHP/SS) who has a tall/projectable frame (6'3"/175). On the mound, this righty pounds the zone with strikes coming from a 3/4 arm slot. He works to a controlled balance point, gets strong glove-side lead and remains compact throughout his delivery. FB ranges from 80-81 mph while showing arm side run which will get in on the RHH's. Curveball has 11/5 shape with good action. Changeup is best off-speed pitch showing sink as he throws it with FB arm speed, helping to create deception to hitters. More velo is in the tank as he works to drive his lower 1/2 off of the rubber. At SS, Tanner has quick/athletic actions and has good range to his glove-side. He funnels smoothly and a quick transfer/exchange. As a hitter - Mayer has a tall/balanced setup with rhythm in his hands. He tracks the ball into the zone and has the ability to drive the ball on the outer 1/3 the other way. Tanner is a well-rounded skill-set that will provide success on the diamond in this his senior year.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
