Official Scouting Report

  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

07/18/2016 - College PREP - Plano (DFW), TX Tanner continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an above average runner at 7.02. In the OF, defensive abilities have improved, displaying smooth actions. Feet are aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He reads balls well off the bat and works to get behind balls, playing through with momentum to his target. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through an uphill swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 75 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength which will aid in his development on the mound.

07/15/2013 - College PREP - Plano (DFW), TX Tanner is a lean LHP/OF that will graduate in 2016. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.24 60 time. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to work to get behind balls and play through with momentum to his target. Lateral movement is a plus and displays range in the OF. Throws are accurate as he gets rid of the baseball quickly, flashing accuracy but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Thompson shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 64-66 mph. Breaking ball displays tilt shape with gradual break. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained. With 3 years to further develop, Tanner has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
