01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Taylor is a senior LHP with strong upside and ability. At the Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament, he showed sound/repeatable mechanics and free arm action. He threw his three pitches with an ability to change speeds effectively and stay in the zone with flashes of command. Offensively, he showed a loose grip that allowed for some good bat speed and contact ability. In all - Varnell is strong prospect that will be an immediate impact guy this fall.

06/15/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Taylor has really grown into an interesting prospect. With a fastball that now reaches 86 and is consistently 83-84,his secondary stuff is now that much more effective making him real tough to deal with. He continues to show an easy arm stroke with repeatable mechanics and solid command of all 3 pitches. Taylor dominated hitters with a minimal pitch count thanks to his ability to get ahead; stay ahead then put hitters away. As a 1B, Taylor uses his feet well around the bag, has some feel on short hops and will sacrifice his body to keep the ball in front to make a play. He will benefit from playing lower with earlier glove position out front with fingers down and simply needs more reps to improve comfort/confidence. At the plate, Taylor displayed a very similar smooth path to the ball but now with some added bat speed and barrel accuracy. He works to stay in the middle but will have to commit to seeing the ball deeper into the zone to do so consistently. The ball jumps when centered and staying through the ball will help in improving power numbers as well. Overall, Taylor had a great week at camp on the mound, at the plate and even played a quality OF when he wasn't picking it at 1B. The jump he has made from one event to another makes it tough to predict just how good this young man could be, but rest assured he is a very talented player with the potential to help a college program early in his career.

03/17/2013 - College PREP - Plainview (Lubbock), TX Taylor is a tall and athletic LHP. On the mound, this crafty lefty has a 3-pitch mix and works both sides of the plate. He pounds the zone with his FB which ranges from 76-79 mph as he works to a tall balance point and in-line with his target. CH is best off-speed pitch and shows arm-side run and sink. An improved release point on his CB will help to develop more effectiveness on the pitch. As a hitter, Varnell remains relaxed and loose swinging on a level path. He delivers the barrel and hits line-drives. With still a year to progress, this LHP is one to keep an eye on.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
