Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

04/07/2019 - College PREP - Plano (DFW), TX Thomas is a tall 1B/LHP prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the field. At 1B, Thomas shows active footwork and attacks the ball aggressively. He gets into an athletic position and fields the ball out in front of his body. He makes a clean exchange and gets rid of the ball quickly, keeping his throws on-line to his target. Following his throws can help Thomas improve defensively. At the plate, this LHH sets up in an athletic stance and takes a short stride. He gets into his load and takes a level swing, leading to solid gap to gap pop. Thomas can improve as a hitter by driving his lower half more. On the mound, Thomas works with a loose arm and a deceptive delivery. He shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 68mph with sinking action. Breaking ball sits from 61-63mph with 3-9 break. Changeup sits from 60-62mph with cutting action as he throws with deceptive arm speed. Gathering to a balance point over the rubber can help Thomas improve as a pitcher. Overall, Thomas is a solid prospect who has the potential to further develop his skills on the field.

11/09/2017 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City (Ages 14-18) Thomas is a young (2020 grad) L/L 2-way player (1B/LHP) who worked hard on his skills during his time at Pirate City. He is very coachable and can make adjustments quickly. As a hitter, this lefty displays a square/athletic stance with an aggressive approach as he's looking to swing it. He takes a hack and squares the ball up, hitting line-drives. He battles at the plate, going 3 for 5 with 3 singles at the event. Working to increase his bat speed while creating extension through contact will help to add to his power. At 1B, Thomas hustles into position behind the GB. He tracks the ball into his mitt, gathers well and makes the plays. Presenting his glove earlier and more out in front will help to avoid the in-between hops. On the mound, this LHP throws a FB & CB from a sidearm delivery. He keeps his eyes on the target and has smooth separation. FB shows slight sinking action which got some GB's when kept down in the zone. Breaking ball has sweeping action with 2/8 shape. He mixes his pitches well and works to keep hitters guessing. Driving his lower 1/2 off of the rubber while finishing more out over his front side will help to improve effectiveness on all pitches. Only a 2020 grad, Thomas has tools with still a ton of time to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
