ADVANCED SWING METRICS BY SWINGTRACKER

Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/OFPosition Projection

12/17/2011 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament - Session 1 Hicks showed as a two-way player on the mound and in the OF for the first time. Feet are active as he takes proper first steps in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He needs to be more aggressive and work to get behind balls more and quicken his feet to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate, flashing carry as he will benefit by getting on a long toss program to aid in building more arm strength. At the plate, hitting grades have improved through a balanced setup and he gets in a strong launch position. Hands work through a level swing path with power showing best to the pull side. He needs to work on keeping hands inside the ball and use his lower half more to improve hitting / power grades. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 73-74 mph with slight arm side tail. Breaking ball shows tight spin with good extension but needs to work to stay on top of pitch. Changeup shows good feel for but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Stock on mound will raise quickly if better off speed pitches are developed.

08/09/2011 - College PREP - Bear (Wilmington), DE Thomas is a young, thin LHP who will graduate in 2013. On the mound, Thomas has a loose arm action, a tall balance point, and smooth separation. He keeps his eyes to his target, he hides the ball well, and he has decent glove side lead. Thomas keeps his shoulders level, he finishes in a complete position, and he throws strikes with all of his pitches. Mound effectiveness can further improve if Thomas can add physical strength, sharpen his CH, and add arm strength. At the plate, Thomas has a tall / square set-up, a proper load, and a short stride. He has good balance, average bat speed, and he swings on a short / level plane. Average hitting grades can get better if Thomas can liven his hands, swing in better rhythm, and spray to all fields.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
