Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

07/25/2009 - Team One North 2009 Thomas threw two innings and only gave up 2 hits and 0 walks. He also improved his 60-time while at this event. On the mound, showed good loose arm action with extension thru ball. Kept eyes on target while having solid pitching mechanics. Worked down in the zone which produces lots of ground balls. When he stayed behind pitch, he utilized lower half efficiently. In the OF, loose arm action allowed for decent carry and made accurate throws. Took proper angles to get to ball quickly and played thru it. At the plate, demonstrated level stroke thru hitting zone which allowed him to use all fields and have some extension thru ball. Demonstrated gap power and will increase as he utilizes his lower half efficiently. He continues to show as a potential two way player at the next level.

01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 Tom as an athletic, two position player who showed best with the glove at this event. In the outfield, he has long, loose actions with rhythm and a strong, accurate arm. Glove work is solid, but he could quicken his exchange a bit. Offensively, he has life in his barrel and showed power to all fields in Tucson. Swing is compact and he gets good extension. Still would like to see him get more out of his lower half. Tried to lift the ball quite a bit in the showcase, but settled down and had 2 hits in his 5 game at bats. On the mound, Tom's velocity was consistent with what we've seen out of him in the last 6 months. Gets some run on the fastball and showed a good feel with both the curveball and the change. Control was solid, and he was loose and used his lower half effectively. Still young. Has time to develop, but shows a good feel with the glove, the bat, and on the mound at present.

10/12/2008 - College PREP - Baltimore, MD Tom continues to show steady improvements in his game, especially on the mound. Arm strength has improved, now touching 84 mph with his fastball. Breaking ball has also improved now showing a tight spin with downward action. Changeup is still his best off speed pitch showing a solid feel for. In the outfield, defensive abilities are solid displaying an idea in taking proper routes and angles in getting around and behind fly balls. He is more suited for a corner spot in the outfield due to foot speed. At the plate, O'Neil has solid average ability and slightly above average power. He shows a solid feel for the barrel and keeps hands inside the baseball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will improve as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. Thomas has potential ability and should develop into a solid collegiate player at possibly two positions.

08/24/2008 - College PREP - Farmingdale, NY Tom is a young two way player on the mound and in the OF. He has a tall, lanky, athletic looking body that shows projection as it continues to physically mature. He did not hit at the event but does show a lot of athletic ability. Foot speed is currently solid average and he utilizes his feet well in tracking down balls in the outfield. He reads balls well of the bat, getting great jumps and showing above average range. He does need to work to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. Arm strength is above average from an over the top slot displaying plus carry and accuracy on his throws. On the mound, fastball shows cutting action to the arm side and utilizes his tall frame to work on a strong downhill plane. Changeup is near above average showing a solid feel for with late sinking action. Breaking ball displays a 11/5 shape with loose spin and needs further development. Arm action is loose, easy and quick working well away from his body. Delivery is outstanding showing solid balance, direction, and tempo. He hides the ball well out of his delivery. With 2 years to further develop, Tom will catch the eyes of the college coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
