08/16/2014 - Under Armour All-America Game, powered by Baseball Factory
Thomas is a LHP with a fastball that explodes out of his hand. There is little effort shown to generate his fastball velocity that sits comfortably in the low 90s and can touch higher. He spins a breaking ball that has 1/7 shape and very tight rotation, and can act as a swing-and-miss pitch.
09/21/2013 - 2013 Under Armour Futures Series East - Jupiter, FL
Szapucki stands and 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, with an athletic frame. He topped at 92 with his fastball, and pitched between 88-91 with tail and sink. His breaking ball was in the upper 70's with downward break and tilt, and he also threw a mid 80's slider with sharp break. His arm worked great back and through, and he generated excellent stuff with what looked like minimal effort. When he stayed over the rubber and kept his lower half underneath him, he was able to drive his pitches down to the bottom of the zone for extra pop and life. This outing was the second we saw in 2013 in which he topped at 92, this after we saw him up to 86 a year earlier - as he has filled out his stuff has taken a jump up.
