Official Scouting Report

07/31/2019 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Thomas continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a bright future on the diamond. On the mound, he has a good overall delivery, a good arm action, and he rotates his hips through to his target. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 79 mph. Fastball shows good late arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with tight spin and late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Control is well above average as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a tall, open setup. He has strong/centered balance with fluid rhythm to load. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields, flashing gap-to-gap pop. At 1B, feet are active as he shows proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are clean but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

03/10/2019 - College PREP - Manalapan, NJ Thomas continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate, hitting abilities has improved through a tall setup. Hands are quick (87 mph exit velocity), generating bat speed through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are soft / sure and he showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 77 mph. Fastball showed a range of 75-77 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

11/12/2017 - College PREP - Middletown (Hartford), CT Thomas is a young, strong, 2-way player who plays 2nd base and RHP. Defensively, Thomas moves well to the ball, he makes the routine plays, and his hands are firm. He keeps the ball in front, has a clean exchange, and throws with a short arm with accuracy to his target. Thomas will need to quicken his feet, field further out in front of his body, and loosen his arm action for defensive skills to get better. On the mound, Thomas keeps his eyes on target, he has good direction toward home, and he gets good extension on his pitches. He has a controlled landing and some A/S run on his FB. Mound effectiveness can get better with more leg drive, earlier separation, and more glove side lead. Offensively, Thomas is a strong hitter with an athletic set-up, good balance, and fast bat speed. He has a direct barrel to the ball, makes hard contact, and has pop into the gaps. Thomas can improve at the plate with a still head, looser grip, and letting the ball travel deeper into the hitting zone.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
