Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

10/08/2014 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Zimmerman continues to show as a RHP/1B with solid play at both positions. Delivery is easy / repeatable, allowing his arm action to work quick and free to the plate. Fastball showed in the low 80 mph range with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is developed through a long toss program. At 1B, feet are active as he shows proper foot work around the bag and is a quality receiver. He displays soft / clean / sure hands and consistently shows the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. At the plate, he shows a squared setup with balance. Hands are quick and through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and makes consistent hard contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to use all fields and create more extension through contact. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, is very coachable, and works hard to be the best player he can be.

05/18/2014 - College PREP - Bel Air (Baltimore), MD Zimmerman continues to show as RHP/1B but currently projects best at 1B where he has really improved his baseball abilities. At 1B, defensive grade has improved, now showing well above average abilities, showing clean / smooth actions. He displays proper footwork around the bag, is a quality receiver, and consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. At the plate he has improved his power numbers, now showing well above average through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing plus bat speed through a level swing path and has leverage in his swing. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. On the mound, once again the threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 83 mph. Fastball showed a range of 79-83mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with sharp break and shows as an outstanding pitch. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to grow as he builds more arm strength.

08/05/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Zimmerman showed on the mound and at 1B for the first time at the event. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date; topping out at 80 mph. Fastball showed a range of 78-80 mph with arm side run on a downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a solid feel for it. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At 1B, he makes the routine plays and presents hands well out front. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to attack balls more, play through, and improve foot quickness. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he learns to keep his hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker and is very coachable.

02/24/2013 - College PREP - Mechanicsburg (Harrisburg), PA Tony is a tall, 2-way player who pitches and catches. On the mound, Tony has a loose arm, eyes on target, and his balance point is controlled. He has good direction toward home, his off-speed are solid, and he finishes completely. More level shoulders and finishing off his pitches will spike mound effectiveness. Behind the plate, Tony has soft / sure hands, playable feet, and he holds a low target. He deadens the ball when blocking, his exchange is clean, and he throws with a long arm action to 2nd base. Catching will get better if Tony can quicken his feet, widen his base, and add arm strength. Offensively, Tony has a square set-up, good balance, and average bat speed. He makes hard contact, uses all fields, and gets his lower 1/2 through. More aggressiveness, better timing, and added lower 1/2 will spike hitting tool grades.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
