Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • SS/OFPosition Projection

11/17/2013 - College PREP - Houston, TX Travis showed as a SS and in the OF for the first time at the event and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.22 runner. Defensive grades are well above average in the IF and OF. At SS, He attacks ground balls through an aggressive approach and displays soft / sure hands as he makes all the plays. Lateral movement is a plus as he moves well side to side, displaying range. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and works to get behind, playing through well with his body. Arm strength has improved as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. He will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick, aggressive, and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and has strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields.

12/27/2012 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament Travis improved his abilities at the plate during his time at Pirate City. He swings with fast bat speed and makes hard contact, spraying the ball. He has pop for a player of his size and hits line-drives to all fields. He gets good weight shift and uses his lower 1/2 to drive. Defensively, he has good pre-pitch movements and he moves well laterally. His arm plays well and he makes accurate throws across the diamond. On the mound, Travis delivers 2 pitches from an over-the-top arm slot and sound arm action. He has a clean arm path and maintains quick tempo. His FB ranges from 74-79 mph and shows some slight downward movement. Smoother rhythm and landing in more of an athletic position will help mound effectiveness improve. Spruiell is a solid player who is one to keep an eye on over the next couple of years.

11/18/2012 - College PREP - Houston, TX Travis is a young SS that will graduate in 2014. Foot speed is slightly above average as indicated by his 7.37 60 time. Feet are quick / athletic as he attacks ground balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft / clean / sure as he makes all the plays. Throws show accuracy, flashing carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Spruiell shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed to and through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. With 2 years to further develop, Travis has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
