Official Scouting Report

  • 2B/OFPosition Projection

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Preseason All-America - 2010 Russell continues to show solid, steady play in his baseball abilities. Defensively, he makes plays and gets to a lot of ball with his quick, athletic feet. Offensively, he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields with a solid eye and recognition of strike zone as he drew 3 BB at the event.

06/13/2009 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 1 Trey has really improved his baseball abilities and his stock as a player. Foot speed has really improved as he shows outstanding foot speed as he ran his best 60 time at 6.88. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in coming to get and playing through the baseball with his feet and hands. He shows off his athletic abilities through the fielding process displaying above average defensive abilities. Arm strength is slightly above average and he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further building more arm strength. At the plate is where Russell may have improved the most now showing above average abilities and power. Hands are quick and direct to the baseball, generating plus bat speed. He has strength in his swing with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered as he was 7 for 9 with 2 2B and a HR at the event. Trey has the makings to be a special type player at the next level and will get a ton of looks from the collegiate coaches.

12/07/2008 - College PREP - McCook, IL Trey is a strong, athletic 3B. Arm strength needs to improve, but he has good lateral movement and a quick exchange. He fields a bit deep and throws against his front leg. Would like to see him allow his momentum to continue toward his target to improve carry and accuracy of his throws. He has a balanced approach at the plate and gets ok extension, but he lacks rhythm. Doesn't use a stride, and tends to wrap the bat early. Is going to need to find a way to stay loose in his stance, get prepped and loaded, and to do it with fluidity if he wants consistent results and better batspeed. Overall a solid young player with room to grow and improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
