Official Scouting Report

  • CPosition Projection

08/05/2009 - Pirate City World Series - Session 2 Tyler shows steady play in his baseball abilities. He plays hard and shows a feel for the game. Arm strength is slightly above average and he must get on a strict long program to aid in further developing more arm strength, lowering pop times. He needs to further develop his blocking and receiving skills with instruction and reps. At the plate, Hays shows a level swing path and makes consistent contact. He was 2 for 4 at the event. He also demonstrated an excellent make up with good overall baseball instincts.

05/24/2009 - College PREP - Fayetteville, AR Hays continue to show improvement in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.37 runner. He utilizes his quick feet well, working in line through the throwing process. He continues to throw from a low arm slot with his ball tailing at the bag. Arm strength has improved but he needs to work on raising his arm slot, staying on top of the baseball for carry and accuracy. His power numbers have improved the most, now displaying solid average power. Hands are quick and work direct to the baseball, generating bat speed with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Class ranking has also improved, now a class 6 type player.

11/16/2008 - College PREP - Shreveport, LA Tyler is a young catcher with a tall, solid body that does show projection as it continues to physically mature. Foot speed is near average and he utilizes his feet well through his quick release on his throws. Arm strength is near average and does need to get on a strict long toss program to aid in building more arm strength. He gets under a lot of throws from a low arm slot and will improve carry as he lengthens arm arc while staying on top of the baseball. Blocking and receiving skills are near average and he needs to further develop for the next level. He is a tough kid and will get in front of the baseball. These skills will improve quickly with some instruction and adjustments. At the plate, Hays has average ability with below average power. He sits in well, taking hands directly to the baseball. He keeps hands inside, utilizing all fields through a line drive type path. Power numbers will increase as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. Tyler has abilities with time and room to continue to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
