08/24/2013 - Under Armour All-America Game, powered by Baseball Factory I can't recall personally seeing more than 97 on the radar gun until I saw Tyler flash 99 several times on the Wrigley Field gun. That is truly rare stuff, guys with that kind of velocity simply don't come around very often. The thing is, it's kind of a regular thing for him - who knows, maybe somebody out there has seen him hit 100? He has an extra large frame at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, we initially comped him to Lance Lynn (Cardinals) but I think Brad Penny (13 year big leaguer) works well too.He gets his chest out over his front knee very well, allowing him to push his arm speed out closer to the plate and rotate through it - this is why I think he gets the mid to upper 90s velocity with what looks like such minimal effort. I saw a plus breaking ball at 80, but he primarily went with the fastball this outing. He walked two and struck out one in his inning of work.

06/17/2011 - USA Baseball 16U Championships (AZ) - 2011 Kolek showed as a two-way player on the mound plus at 1B but currently projects best on the mound for the next level. Delivery is outstanding showing on time separation and works in line showing repeatable mechanics. Arm action is long, loose, and free working well to the plate. He uses his lower half with good extension as he uses his glove side well. Fastball showed a range of 80-83 mph with arm side run. Changeup is best off speed pitch showing a plus feel for with late arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape, with tight spin and late breaking action. He attacks hitters but needs to work on better control and command of all his pitches. At 1B, he is a solid receiver with clean hands. He must develop better footwork around the bag and present hands more out front. Offensively, Kolek shows a balanced approach and has excellent raw strength with the baseball exploding off bat when centered. With 3 years to further develop, Tyler has an upside on the mound and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his abilities.

02/06/2011 - College PREP - Houston, TX Tyler is a young, projectable, RHP with very good stuff for his age. As a 2014 grad, Tyler already has a FB touching 84 MPH, which he throws from a loose / sound, high 3/4 arm slot. He has a tall / controlled balance point, smooth separation, and works in good rhythm. Tyler has pretty good glove side lead, good direction toward home, and lands in a square / athletic position. Mound effectiveness can get better with improved off-speed, and continuing to add arm strength. Offensively, Tyler has a tall set-up, good load, and short stride. He is a strong hitter with decent bat speed, and makes hard contact with the baseball. Tyler has pop in his bat for a young player, and overall hitting can improve with better barrel accuracy, and more extension to and through the baseball.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
