06/03/2012 - College PREP - River Forest (Chicago), IL Tyler continues to show well at his tryouts with the Factory. He showed similar numbers in most areas of his workout with improvements during his blocking and hitting evaluations. He shows good bat speed from both sides of the plate with the ability to spray the ball to all fields. He shows a middle of the field approach getting good extension through the zone. Behind the plate, he is a hard worker with good feet and an accurate throwing arm. Overall arm strength is an area to continue to work on with a good long toss program and proper mechanics. Tyler is a player to watch this summer.

12/27/2011 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament - Session 2 Stephens showed similar abilities as we had previously seen in Milwaukee, WI. Feet are active as he works in line, gaining ground through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times show a range of 2.19-2.27 with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength with carry. Receiving / blocking skills are playable tools that show potential as he continues to develop. At the plate, Tyler shows an athletic setup and loads well, getting into a strong launch position. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and he works to keep his hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. His lower half works well through the swing maintaining balance.

09/11/2011 - College PREP - Oak Creek (Milwaukee), WI Tyler showed good improvements in all areas of his game from his previous workout with the factory. His defensive evaluations during receiving and blocking drills showed steady improvements. He has a quick release, shows good flexibility and a low target. He shows good blocking form to both sides and anticipates well with the ball in the dirt. At the plate, he continues to show good strides from both sides of the plate. He shows balance, rhythm and a level bat path through the ball. He has a bit more bat speed from the right side and looks more confident but he is solid both left handed and right handed. He is still young and with continued hard work and more foot speed, will continue to develop into the player he wants to be.

07/14/2011 - Cape Cod Pro Select Training - July 14-18, 2011 Tyler is a catcher that will graduate in 2013. Foot speed is average as he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active as he works inline and gains ground to his target. He shows a clean transfer / exchange with pop times showing a range of 2.18-2.34 with an average of 2.25. Throws are accurate flashing carry but needs to get on a long toss program to aid in building more arm strength and lowering pop times. Receiving and blocking skills show potential as being quality tools at the next level as he continues to improve. Offensively, Stephens is a switch hitter that shows slightly above average abilities from both sides with average power. He shows a solid setup and loads well getting into a strong launch position. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed with power numbers improving as he adds body strength and utilizes his lower half more efficiently through the swing. With 2 years to further develop, Tyler shows a lot of abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
