  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

10/12/2011 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2011 Tyler is a big, strong RHP/1B who showed well at the Arizona Senior Fall Classic. On the mound he showed a three-pitch repertoire of fastball, curveball and change. He throws all three pitches for strikes and uses his tight breaking ball with depth as an out-pitch. His delivery is balanced and easy with good tempo. He is poised on the mound and aggressively goes after hitters. In the field, Tyler works hard to get into good fielding position and is a dependable defender. He shows the ability to help his infielders with a knack for picking balls out of the dirt. As a hitter he shows a good bat path and the advanced ability to let the ball travel. He uses the entire field and is a difficult out. Overall, Tyler is an appealing two-way player with a complete all-around game.

07/29/2011 - Under Armour Southwest Regional Tournament - 2011 Walter continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid average runner at 7.35. He utilizes his quick feet well as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are soft, clean, and sure as he makes the plays. Offensively, Tyler shows a solid setup and tracks the ball well. Hands are quick, generating bat speed as he shows a solid feel for the barrel with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 3 for 8 with a HR and 4 BB as he displays a solid eye at the plate. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-81 mph with late life and arm side run. Breaking ball has improved to well above average, displaying 12/6 downward shape with tight spin.

03/20/2011 - College PREP - Baltimore, MD Tyler showed some improvements on the mound, and in the INF during his last workout in Baltimore. Defensively, Tyler showed good pre-pitch actions, sure hands, and good agility. He makes plays, his exchange is clean, and he squares his shoulders well to his target. Tyler has a long / loose arm and delivers the ball with accuracy and carry to his target. If Tyler can field further out in front of his body and work in a lower position, defensive grades will get better. On the mound, Tyler has a short / easy arm action, a controlled balance point, and a heavy FB. He has smooth, on-time separation, level shoulders, and good direction toward home plate. Abilities on the mound can get better if Tyler can lengthen his back arm action. At the plate, Tyler has a square / athletic set-up, short stride, and a repeatable swing. He has fast bat speed, he makes hard contact, and he has pop in his bat when properly centered. If Tyler can loosen his grip, and create backspin on the baseball, solid hitting grades can further spike.

12/27/2010 - Christmas Camp and Tournament 2010 - Session 2 Tyler is a young, good sized, 2-way player who Pitches and plays 1st base. He has the potential to play both positions at the next level. On the mound, Tyler has good balance, proper separation, and he works in good tempo. His FB has A/S run and decent life, and he mixes his pitches well. Tyler competes in the the zone and pitches to contact. Mound effectiveness can get better if Tyler can add velocity and improve his overall command. Defensively, Tyler has soft hands, playable feet, and he keeps the ball in front of his body. He makes the routine plays on balls hit his way, and he throws with a solid arm action to his target. Offensively, Tyler has a good set-up and good pitch selection. He gets his barrel through the zone, tracks well, and makes consistent contact. Offensive tool grades can get better if Tyler can liven up his bat, level off his swing, and not spin off the baseball. Tyler is very coachable, eager to learn the game, and is a great teammate.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
