Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

10/18/2009 - National Tryout - Sauget (St. Louis), IL Tyler has really improved his abilities on the mound. Arm strength has improved as indicated by his top velocity of 86 mph. Fastball showed a range of 82-86 mph with heavy sink and run on a downhill plane that creates tough angles on hitters. Off speed pitches have improved with changeup showing as his best off speed pitch. Changeup shows a plus feel for with fade and sinking action as it shows as a quality pitch at the next level. Breaking ball displays 10/6 shape with loose feel and flashes potential when he stays on top. Command and control are a plus as he attacks hitters throwing strikes with all his pitches, changing speeds well. Wood has an upside on the mound and will be a quality arm at the next level.

12/27/2008 - Under Armour Recruiting Classic 2008 Tyler is a two way player on the mound and at 1B with a solid, strong looking body that does show projection as it continues to physically mature. He does project well at both positions. Defensively, abilities are solid average as he shows proper footwork around the bag. Glove action is soft and sure as he consistently showed the ability to pick throws out of the dirt, saving throws. Foot speed is near average and does need to get on a speed / agility program to increase foot quickness. Arm strength is near above average displaying life and carry across the diamond but does need to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing arm strength and raise velocities. At the plate, Wood has near above average ability and power. He maintains solid balance allowing his hands to work freely to the baseball, generating bat speed. Power potential is there as the baseball jumps off his bat when centered as he utilizes his lower half well through the swing. He was 5 for 9 with 4 walks displaying a good eye at the event. On the mound, abilities are above average as he has good tempo and attacks the zone with 3 pitches getting ahead of hitters. He has a solid feel for his changeup and is not afraid to throw it. Fastball shows run and sinking action. He has a good demeanor on the mound with an upside. Tyler will catch the eyes of the college coaches and could be a two way player as he continues to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
