10/12/2011 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2011 Zach is a talented young RHP who showed very well in two outings at the Arizona Senior Fall Classic. He is a strike thrower who is aggressive with the fastball and attacks hitters. His long, loose frame leads to a clean arm stroke and good arm speed. He uses a tailing low to mid 80s fastball, a curve ball with some bite and an advanced sinking change in his repertoire. He has advanced command of his fastball for a young pitcher that he throws from a repeatable, fluid delivery. Overall Zach has a feel for the game and should be a weekend starter at the college level as he refines his stuff and continues to mature physically.

03/27/2011 - College PREP - Washington, PA Maier showed well on the mound at his last workout in Washington, PA. He has great size, a long / loose arm action, and he works in good rhythm. He has a controlled balance point, smooth separation, and good direction toward home. Zach has a good idea on the mound, lands in a square position, and he bends his back properly. At the plate, Zach showed a square / athletic stance, short stride, and good balance. He has a smooth swing, he tracks well, and he makes consistent contact. Zach will need to avoid wrapping the bat and shorten up his swing in order to get better at the plate.

06/18/2010 - USA Baseball 16U Championships (FL) - 2010 Zach continues to shine on the mound as he displays a solid mound presence with a big upside. Fastball showed arm side run on a strong downhill plane. Off speed pitches show potential as being quality pitches at the next level. He attacks hitters, getting ahead and changing speeds well as he locates all of his pitches. His body also has a lot of room to grow. He had 2 outings during the tournament, and threw a complete game in one of those outings, giving up 3 unearned runs and only 4 hits while striking out 9, as he pounded the zone throughout the outing. His delivery and control are very polished. At 1B, he presents a solid target as he is a plus receiver. Offensively, Maier shows a level swing path through a balanced approach, flashing quick hands. We thought his overall mechanics and power potential improved as a hitter since we last saw him. At the event, he was 3 for 9 with a 2B and 3 RBI. He is a potential two way player at the next level, but we feel his brightest future is on the mound where he will get a ton of looks, especially as velocities continue to improve. Maier is also a very coachable and respectful player.

10/28/2009 - Arizona Fr/So Fall Classic - 2009 Maier continues to show a lot of improvements in his baseball abilities. Arm strength has improved to near above average as he topped out at 84 mph on the mound. Fastball showed a range of 78-84 mph with running action on a downhill plane that creates tough angles on hitters. Changeup has improved to solid average showing a solid feel for with confidence in the pitch. He shows at 1B for the first time displaying near above average defensive abilities with an idea and knowledge of the position. Glove action is sure as he consistently picked balls out of the dirt, saving throws. At the plate, hitting abilities and power are now solid average through a balanced approach. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed as he shows a solid feel for the barrel. He was 2 for 8 with a 2B at the event. On the bases, he shows solid instincts and will take the extra base.

06/29/2009 - College PREP - Amelia (Cincinnati), OH Zach is a tall thin pitcher with a great build. On the mound, Zach shows a loose arm and a rhythmic delivery. He stays balanced and finishes well. As he gets stronger and uses his lower half more, his velocity should increase but he has a feel for his off speed pitches and he is accurate. Everything works well on the mound for Zach and with a long toss and strength and conditioning program, sky's the limit with this kid.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
