Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/OFPosition Projection

10/16/2013 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Zach showed well as a 2-way player during his time in Arizona. On the hill, Zach has a nice arm action, he hides the ball well, and his control is good. He has good feel for his off-speed, he mixes them in well, and he finishes completely. In the OF, Zach gets in a good ready position, he centers the ball well, and he throws with accuracy to his target. Offensively, Zach has an athletic set-up, a clean stroke, and he rotates through the ball well. He finishes completely, and makes solid contact.

07/09/2013 - College PREP - Minneapolis, MN Zach is an athletic LHP/OF that will graduate in 2015. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 7.34 60 time. Feet are active / aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He needs to work to get behind balls well, playing through with momentum to his target. Defensive grade and range will continue to improve as he improves his foot quickness. Throws are accurate, flashing carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Rustad shows an open setup with balance. Hands are loose are quick, flashing bat speed and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent hard contact and has strength in his swing, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 76-78 mph on a downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains his arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with fading action. With 2 years to further develop, Zach has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
