Official Scouting Report

  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

12/20/2018 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Zach continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. At 1B, he displays smooth / fluid actions. He works to square ball up and makes the routine plays. He displays proper footwork around the bag and he is a quality receiver. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 68-69 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Control is solid as he attacks hitters, throwing strikes with all his pitches. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength which will aid in his development on the mound. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.

10/07/2018 - College PREP - Washington, PA Zach is a strong, two-way player who can get it done on both sides of the ball. His loose, smooth arm stroke on the mound leads to impressive stuff with great potential and good present action. His delivery is fluid and repeatable as he gets to a consistent release point to create deception with his pitches. He features a low 70's FB that he throws down in the zone, a 10-5 curve with good shape and a changeup with arm side action. At first, he works well around the bag with active feet to create good angles. He gains ground on the ball and makes all the plays with a square fielding position. A long toss program will improve arm strength and accuracy. At the plate, his level swing and strong lower half lead to spray tendencies and the ability to use all fields. He stays balanced throughout his swing with fluid actions to cover the entire strike zone and deliver the barrel. Zach is a talented player with lots of potential on the field.

10/07/2017 - FDI Pitching and Catching Accelerated Training Weekend (14-18) Zach is a RHP prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the FDI Pitching and Catching Accelerated Training Weekend. On the mound this righty comes to a balance point over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He extends through on his release and finishes square to his target. Zach shows a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 71mph with sinking action. Changeup sits from 64-66mph with good sinking action as he throws with fastball arm speed. Zach can improve as a pitcher by loosening his arm action. With four more years to develop, Zach has the time and potential to further progress his skills on the mound.

08/04/2016 - Baseball Factory Pro Select Training at Historic Dodgertown Zach is a young two-way prospect who is graduating at 2021. As a RHP, Zach has good body control with a balanced motion that is on time and in line with home plate. He has the proper stride length and rotates to his target. Zach attacks the strike zone with above average control. At 3B, Zach makes all the routine plays. He presents his glove well and does a nice job getting in front of the baseball. Zach has an accurate arm from a high 3/4 arm slot that is slightly long for infield. Offensively, Zach has a square stance and leads with his lower half. His is swing path is direct and on plane getting his hands to the baseball. Zach showed hard contact to the pull side. Zach is a solid all around prospect with potential to impact the game in multiple areas.

04/03/2016 - National Tryout - Pittsburgh, PA Zach continues to work hard on his skills. On the mound, this righty maintains fluid tempo and repeats his delivery well. FB ranges from 57-59 mph as he works it in and out. Changeup shows slight sinking action and will continue to develop as he works to throw it with the same arm speed as his FB. At 3B - Zach takes good angles working around the GB into an athletic/square fielding position. He gets rid of the ball and makes accurate throws across the diamond. Continuing to develop his footwork/agility will help to increase lateral range. With the bat, he steps into the box with an aggressive approach and is looking to swing it. He works to engage his lower 1/2 and barrels the ball up with some pop. A 2021 grad - Spellen still has a ton of time and will only continue to progress.

07/30/2015 - Baseball Factory Pro Select Training at Historic Dodgertown Zach continues to show as a RHP/3B but currently projects best at 3B where he has improved his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At 3B, feet are active and he works to square up ground balls. Hands are soft but needs to present more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. At the plate, he has improved his hitting / power grades an athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path, creating extension. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 54-56 mph. Stock on the mound will continue to grow as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and develops off speed stuff. Mental makeup is a plus as he plays hard and is very coachable.

03/29/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Pittsburgh, PA Zach is a young (2021 grad) 2-way player as a RHP/3B. On the bump, this righty throws 2 pitches (FB & CB) from a high 3/4 arm slot. He works to a controlled balance point, keeps his eyes on the target and works in-line toward the plate. FB ranges from 57-60 mph as he works the ball to both sides of the plate. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape with gradual action. At 3B, Zach hustles into position behind the GB. He fields the ball cleanly with soft hands and has a clean exchange to throw. With the bat, this RHH shows an open setup with patience as he tracks the ball into the zone. He swings on a level path and drives the ball up the middle of the field. Overall abilities will improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Arm strength (long toss)
2. Glove side lead
3. Extension on finish
Defense
1. Glove presentation
2. Glove action
Offense
1. Swing path
2. Contact points
3. Lower 1/2 drive

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
