11/07/2013 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Gaines showed on the mound and for the first time at 3B at the event. Feet are active as he works to stay balls up and displays soft / clean hands as he makes the routine plays. For defensive grades to continue to improve, he needs to attack balls, play through while presenting hands more out front, and increase foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic stance. Hands are loose and work through a direct / level swing path as he makes consistent contact. He has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he improves bat speed. On the mound, arm strength has improved slightly as he threw his best velocity to date, topping out at 74 mph. Fastball showed a range of 69-74 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is developed and he works to throw more strikes. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard.
