Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

11/07/2013 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Gaines showed on the mound and for the first time at 3B at the event. Feet are active as he works to stay balls up and displays soft / clean hands as he makes the routine plays. For defensive grades to continue to improve, he needs to attack balls, play through while presenting hands more out front, and increase foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic stance. Hands are loose and work through a direct / level swing path as he makes consistent contact. He has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he improves bat speed. On the mound, arm strength has improved slightly as he threw his best velocity to date, topping out at 74 mph. Fastball showed a range of 69-74 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is developed and he works to throw more strikes. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard.

07/29/2013 - College PREP - Gaffney, SC Zachary is a solid, broad RHP that will graduate in 2016. Delivery is repeatable allowing his arm action to work loose to the plate. Fastball shows a range of 72-33 mph. Breaking ball displays loose spin with no real shape as he needs to work to stay on top of pitch. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a straight change. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and works to throw more strikes.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
