10/24/2020 - Fall Pro Training Experience - So Cal (HS) Zachary was dominant during the competition portion of the Baseball Factory 2 Day Southern California Experience. On the mound, he shoved it and struck out 4 of the 5 hitters he faced. At the plate, he went 4 for 8 showing plus exit velocity off the tee of 86mph. Small has a good presence on the mound and goes right after hitters filling up the zone with 78-82mph fastballs with cutting action and 64-67mph breaking balls with sharp break. He possesses a strong base which allows him to maintain his balance throughout his delivery and he finishes in an athletic and complete fashion. On flat ground, he threw the ball as hard as 85mph which is rare to see in a freshman arm. With a continued focus on getting faster with his feet, he will definitely continue to be a multi-positional threat at a high level in high school.

01/26/2020 - National Tryout Plus - San Diego, CA Zachary showed very well at SS and on the mound during his last workout with The Factory. He is a lean, athletic player with a high ceiling. At SS, Zachary has fluid/active feet, soft/presentable hands, and he fields athletically. He funnels well, his exchange clean, and he throws with momentum and carry from a loose arm across the diamond. On the mound, Zachary has good balance, a loose arm action, and he keeps a still head. He gets good arm extension, finishes completely, and he throws strikes. Offensively, Zachary has clean mechanics, good balance, and he takes a square stride toward the pitcher. He has a level swing, he gets good extension, and he uses his lower body.

12/27/2019 - Baseball Factory West Coast Winter Classic (Ages 12-14) Zachary continues to show the makings of a special type player with improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At SS, defensive abilities have improved as he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls up and plays through with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and presents well out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy and carry on his throws. At the plate, hitting and power potential has really improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (80 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields and has strength in his swing with gap-to-gap pop. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 75 mph. Fastball showed a range of 69-75 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Control is solid as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable. Zachary will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities as he continues to progress his game, possibly as a two-way guy.

01/27/2019 - Interactive Video Program - San Diego, CA Zachary is a thin, athletic, 2-way player who pitches and plays SS. On the mound, Zachary has an athletic delivery, good balance, and he separates on time. He gets good extension on his pitches, lands with good direction toward home, and finishes completely. At SS, Zachary has soft/presentable hands, he fields in a square position, and his exchange is clean. Offensively, Zachary has solid actions, a square set-up, and good balance. He has fast bat speed, makes hard/level contact, and he gets his lower body through. Overall skills can improve if Zachary can work on the following.

Pitching
1. Arm action
2. Off-speed
Infield
1. Lighten feet
2. Pre-pitch actions
3. Footwork
Offense
1. Let ball travel

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
