Official Scouting Report

  • 3B/1BPosition Projection

09/27/2015 - College PREP - Scranton, PA Zak is a young, 2-way corner player with a good feel for the game. Defensively, from 3B he works from low to high with efficient feet and glove out front. His throws show significant life on them and as he works to stay through the ball and follow his throws, accuracy will improve. At 1B, he presents a big target with feel around the bag, especially on DPs. At the plate, this RHH hits with a quick stick from a square stance. His actions are quiet with a soft stride and smooth load. Engaging his lower 1/2 and attacking the baseball will only help Zak to launch balls into the gaps. Overall, Zak is a talented player with versatility as he enters his junior season.

01/16/2015 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Zak is a 2017 3B who is the type of guy that every team needs in the dugout. At the plate, Zak possesses a balanced set up, swings on a level plane and consistently lets the ball get deep in the zone, allowing him to use all fields. He loads his hands well and shows good timing with his swing. Power numbers will increase as Zak learns to incorporate his lower half more and stay shorter with his swing. At 3B, Zak works hard to get around the ball, presents his hands out in front and shows smooth actions to his backhand. Arm strength will increase through a structured long toss program and a quicker exchange will lead to Zak becoming a better fielder. Zak is a player that respects the game and his coaches, and he will continue to develop over time due to his work ethic and desire.

07/07/2013 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition (Ages 12-14) Zach showed a lot of potential while at the Cape Cod event. As a fielder he attacks the baseball and has decent arm strength but the fielding position is too high and footwork/agility needs work. On the mound Zach was particularly impressive displaying three workable pitches. His tempo was good, he kept the ball down in the zone and he has good arm action. He needs to keep his front side closed, lead with glove side and separate closer to body. As a hitter Zach has an athletic setup, smooth load and good timing. Staying inside the ball, driving his hands and letting the ball travel into the proper hitting zones are areas for improvement.

02/23/2013 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 12-14) Zach is a solid young hitter who displays very good strength, and an understanding of the swing. He shows great ability to use his hands during the swing, which results in great barrel action and also great barrel accuracy. Zach needs to allow his hands to load behind his back hip, this will allow his hands to work even better, and it will also increase the bat speed. Also he needs to allow his barrel to be delivered and not push his hands forward, this limits the barrel speed at times and also causes his contact to be out in front.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
